Paragraph 2
I picked this passage because I can understand and connect in what Pi is saying on why animals are like humans. They have a lot of paper work and stuff when they have to move from zoo to zoo. It is just like a person moving to a new house or place. I have lived in 3 different homes so far in my lifetime. It takes so long to move because of all our stuff like furniture electronics and other things. You need to have the house inspected and fix up thing sometimes. Moving is not easy but sometimes you just have to do it.

I picked this passage because it sounds like the very sad event of Titanic. When the boat is sinking in the book describes like how Titanic sunk. The boat size in Life Of Pi is just about smaller but it is still big because of all the animals it carries. The book says “Everything was screaming: the sea, the wind, my heart.” That must be the way the people on Titanic and Pi were thinking. I could never be as brave as Pi because knowing I might die and he was so relaxed

I picked this passage because it is funny and I can connect because Pi is from India moving to Canada and he says “were Winnipeggers at heart”. I am like Pi because I lived in Richmond my whole life but most of activities are in Vancouver like school, sports and drums. I feel like a Vancouver at heart.

I can connect to this paragraph because I have memories from six years ago where I went on a cruise and went to lots of places that I will remember. Pi was so thankful to be seeing all the places. Pi sees everything in observation like me.

Why I chose this passage: This passage was one of the most saddening lines for me in the whole book so far. Theo expects every parent to hit, shout and slap when she had done something wrong. This upset very much since Theo should not have been living like this with Rae. I feel the way that Rae was treating Theo was despicable. While Theo was living with the Kaldors a similar event happened when the parents did not hit and slap her after Anna and Theo went biking for too long. Now that Theo has been exposed to much more safe and enjoyable life styles, I feel that Theo will never want to go back to live with Rae.

Why I chose this passage: This passage really set a mood in my mind. From the shyness of Theo and her un-enthusiastic attitude towards Sharon, I was surprised to know that Sharon really liked her and considered her as a friend. I feel that Theo should have taken this to heart a little more and showed Sharon that she truly did appreciate her love. If I put my self in Theo’s shoes, I would reciprocate much more and show her love for Sharon, just like Sharon is showing it for her.

Why I chose this passage: In my opinion, this passage was the Turning point of Theo’s excitement to seeing the Kaldors again. I am sure it was enough for Theo for the kaldors not only to recognize her, but they were not the family she lived with. They did not get along and bickered with each other constantly. Theo’s little heart must have been crushed at seeing that they were not as flawless as she thought they were.
Passage #4: Lisbeth leant against Theo as Anna opened the rest o her presents. “Sometimes I feel as if we’ve known you for a long time,” she whispered. You have thought Theo sadly. She could never tell them that now.

Why I chose this passage: I decided to choose this passage because I felt that Theo handled the situation very maturely. If I was in that situation, I would have blurted everything out and told them all about her life in there home that they seemed to not know about. I admire Theo for her always being cautious towards what she is saying. She filters her words and makes sure everything she says is appropriate, especially in this situation.

1. Why do you think Bellaʼs behaviour has been going on for so long?
I feel that ever since Bella had met Edward, her life was nothing without him. She only usually spent a few minutes a day without him. It is very self explanatory to miss someone so much, especially someone who devotes all their time to you. Although, months have past Bella is still preoccupied with the fact that Edward is gone, since usually he was her entire life before he left.
2. If you were in Bellaʼs situation, would you act the same or differently? Explain?
Personally, I would have been cooperating about it five moths later. Of course I would still miss him, but an event that happened five months ago, should be passed by and still thought about only occasionally. Promoting so much sorrow to everyone around you is not always a good Idea and can cause more problems.
3. Why hasnʼt Charlie done anything about Bellaʼs attitude?
From the experiences I have had in reading the Twilight series, Charlie has always been the laid back kind of guy. He has a growing teenage daughter and is not quite sure how to control her big emotions. He knew Bellaʼs love for Edward was great, but never thought it would cause this much grief. I feel that deep inside, Charlie wants to put a stop to her attitude, but is not sure how. By reading in between the lines of the book, I have seen that Charlie feels for his daughter and truly wants to help.
4. Why hasnʼt Bella and Edward kept in touch?
Edward had always looked out for Bellaʼs feelings. I am sure He is still thinking about her, just as much as she is thinking of him. My guess for them not keeping in touch would be that Edward does not want to upset Bella even more than she is. By looking at this book on a deeper level, I think that Edward is aware of how Bella is feeling and may want to come back.
5. Do you think Edward will come back for Bella?
In my opinion, the answer would be yes. Edward and Bellaʼs love was two great to just end so abruptly and be over. Besides, how would the rest of the Twilight series continue without both Bella and Edward? Just knowing that there are two more books in the Twilight series, after, gives it away completely.

We are beginning our literature circles next week. In preparation you need the following:
-a new duotang for tomorrow that you will be using for the program
-start thinking of a novel you would like to read.
You will be in groups of 4-6, reading the same book. I have a good collection from which you can choose. If you'd like to use a book that I don't have, you are welcome to bring in your own (provided that at least three other people will agree to get the book by next week).
We will be practicing the literature circle skills and jobs this week, and then we'll officially begin the program.

Dear Tonya
Dear Aunt Tonya,
I’ve been meaning to ask you something. I came up with a great idea. You work so hard to get everything done. You always take great care of Lenny, Kaley and I.
You have too much driving to do, taking us everywhere. I have the answer to make your life easier. You will have time to do things like getting your hair done and just relaxing.
I’m ready to learn how to drive. Don’t worry you know I’ll be careful, I won’t go fast. Did you see Kenny’s car? It needs some paint but is doesn’t cost much. Donny’s father is giving him his old car. I got to ride in it yesterday.
I always follow the rules. I promise I will learn to drive safely. I can go to the store for you and take everyone anywhere. You can get you hair done to make it look very pretty and put you feet up and just relax.

Canes Enable Free write
p.s. if you want to know why i am posting again its because i found some spelling mistakes and i wanted to improve it a little bit.
My thoughts on canes enable were, I never knew there were so many different canes for different illnesses. When Laurence came in with his purple t-shirt and black shorts and his leg I didn’t know what was happening. When he took off his leg and he showed us all the things he could do. It was amazing, I learned so much from him. On his life and his perspective and it makes you think how lucky you really are.
At the end I asked Laurence do you ever think it’s unfair why you have this cancer? And are you jealous when you see other people with two legs? He told me yes, I do think it’s unfair. But I am grateful that I’m alive and healthy.
I learned so much from him like: what places are accessible and what it was like for him to grow up with a prosthetic leg. Or how much it cost (a lot) or if you gain weight it hurts because you would have to change the leg to his size. What bothered me was when he said he applied for jobs and some people didn’t accept him because of his leg.
What surprised me was that he was so open and he does so many things. Like skiing, dancing, and he travels to so many places.
When I heard him talk abut accessible places. I was like aren’t all places accessible. Then I realized I was wrong and if I were to change things about a school it would be. Elevators, ramps, and more handicap parking.

What he did was amazing, I learned so much from him. On his life and his perspective and it makes you think how lucky you really are. Canes Enable Response
1) What are your thoughts on the presentation?
My thoughts on the presentation was that it was a very good one and that you learn a lot about canes and how they can be used. For example, there is the umbrella cane. It is a cane on one side and an umbrella on the other! Neat huh? Also the canes looked really cool. The word transportation sheet was kind of boring because it wasn’t something that interested me.
2) What did you learn?
I learned that there are a lot of people who are having a hard time out there in the world moving around and that we are lucky not to have to use a cane, wheelchair or crutches for the rest of our entire lives. I also learned that canes could be used for more than just walking. They used to be used to store liquor and the like and was also a symbol of authority (power).
3) What surprised you?
What surprised me the most was the weight of his prosthetic leg. It seemed to weigh 5 lbs. or more. Also, when I first saw him coming in, he looked like he had 2 legs. But when he came closer, I saw that on leg was a different colour that the other. Then, it hit me. He didn’t have 2 legs, but one real and one removable leg. He also gave a very good performance.
4) What are your thoughts on making places more accessible?
One idea that went through my head is making everybody “handicapped,” so that all areas will be accessible all the time. Another way that we could make places more accessible is by replacing all stairs with ramps so that it makes it easier on everyone to get around with heavy objects like suitcases. Or we could just get an elevator especially for the disabled for every set of staircases that are really big.

I thought that presentation was very good and to the the point. The speaker Debbie Havusha was very good in enabling people to understand her organization. Personally I learned a lot about what canes can do for people. Debbie taught us about canes and what different canes can do for people. The guest Lawrence taught me many things like how much a prosthetic leg costs to how he can accomplish goals like somebody with two legs.
I learned that canes don’t only stabilize people but also that you can use them for many different ways. We also learned different ways you can move using the letters of the alphabet. Lawrence showed us what he could do with one leg. This gave me a better understanding to how people can adapt to different situations.
I was a bit surprised on how Lawrence was so confident to talk about his leg and his past. People I know would not feel as comfortable talking about their disability in front of a large group of people.
Ways that I would make different places accessible is to make ramps going on top of the stairs. I would also put in a hand rail and if i could an elevator.

Canes Enable response
Canes Enable presentation was very fascinating to me because I learned daily challenges that I would have never imagined people having to go through. Debbie Havusha was like our ‘tour guide’ through the experience. I thought that she puts a lot of effort into anything she does. For example, the canes enable presentation and documentary. Although the presentation was only one third of what it should have been I thought it was very interesting and engaging.
The things I really liked were when Debbie took out Sarah Bear. Sarah Bear is a little stuffed animal with a prosthetic ‘leg’ that kids can hug to comfort them. She contains questions inside of her little ‘hoodie’ that we could each ask Lawrence such as ‘have you been able to do everything you have wanted to?’ All of these answers and questions were fascinating to me.
Just to think of the idea that one person can get around his wants, needs and dreams really touched me. His want or important but his dreams are incredible to accomplish. Many people think their life is over and they don’t do anything or take chances to see if thy can accomplish what their dream is. I think it’s incredible that Lawrence took in all of this news when h was just en years old.
Debbie introduced us to Lawrence around twenty or forty minutes into the presentation. Lawrence is a man who had is leg amputated and replaced with a prosthetic leg when he was just ten years old because he had bone cancer. Not in an insulting way, but, I could never do anything with just one leg. It would be a great challenge for me and I would be held back from many adventures that I would and had taken with my family. But that is where I went wrong. I thought that having one leg and a prosthetic leg isn’t good enough to do many physical activities out doors, indoors and in the water. But you can do almost anything you wish to do.
I also liked when Lawrence told us and showed us about him self, like when he took off his leg and he started to dance on one leg. He said "the way you move and where you move always means something different."What I found really nice is that he doesn’t consider himself different to us. He doesn’t care what people think of him, how they react to the news and his story or anything like that. When he told us that he had gone skiing for 6 hours yesterday on one leg I found that amazing and unbelievable. I took snowboarding lessons and the first hour of the class I broke my arm. I am surprised that he has not been sevearly injured while he was doing these physical activities.
Lawrence had us all guess how much a prosthetic leg costs. We were all way off because we guessed in the hundreds and tens. He told us that an average prosthetic leg costs about fifteen thousand dollars. I went in to shock and I can imagine that my mouth also flew open in shock. But what I really picked up was that fifteen thousand dollars, just for a NORMAL PROSTHETIC LEG!!!! That is a huge amount of money that would take years for me to raise! There are also some special prosthetic legs that can be put in water and those can cost up to forty thousand dollars!
I think that some people are assuming that there aren’t so many people that need wheelchairs in the world but it’s sad to hear that there are a lot more then you would imagine. Many places are not wheelchair accessible including our school. I find this really bad because there is one child that needs help walking in grade 4 because he has some disorders. So he uses a wheel chair. But he must have one on each floor of the school! Even though there are only 3 floors to the school I would imagine he has around four or five wheelchairs with him.
There have also been times when my fellow classmates have needed to be in wheelchair accessible places. Like Jonah, he was once in a wheelchair and because our school is non-wheelchair accessible he could not get around very easily. He could only use his wheelchair for recess and when he was on the main floor, lobby. The rest he had to do in crutches.
This also happened to me but I didn’t have to use a wheelchair. I only used crutches but the part that bugged me the most was that it was so hard to go up and down the stairs. It drove nuts! I had to get someone to carry my crutches up and down the stairs and then they needed to wait until I crawled up or down the stairs to get my crutches. I rented my crutches from London rugs and when I didn’t have anyone to carry my crutches for me I would have to just throw them down the stairs and just hope that nothing would happen to them. And luckily nothing did.

Canes Enable Presantation
The Canes Enable presentation was very inspiring to me. It taught me many interesting things that I had not known before. Luckily, I have had the experience of working with Debby on this program last year for our Tikkun Olam project along with Alex. This helped me connect and feel like I had known a lot about Canes Enable during the presentation. I hope that Debby will join us again for the next part of her workshop.
Throughout this presentation I learned many new and amazing things. I found the umbrella cane a very neat invention, although there are some problems with it. I learned that handicapped is a derogatory term. Lawrence, was the highlight of the presentation for me. He showed us that it is possible to do all the things we do with only one leg. He told us that he had just recently skied four kilometres! Lawrence taught me that if you really put your mind to something, you can pursue it even with a disability. I also learned about how difficult and expensive it is to get a prosthetic leg. In my opinion, they should not be so expensive because families may be in need of one but might not be able to afford it. I know that Lawrence will succeed in anything he chooses to do.
What surprised me the most in this presentation is how open Lawrence answered each of the questions, even if they were extremely personal. It seemed to me that he no longer felt ashamed of his one leg but instead happy that he was unique and can do so many inspiring things. Lawrence was very nice in taking of his prosthetic leg and passing it around for us to see what it looked like and how it operated.
I feel that making things more accessible is a very important thing to do. People with disabilities should be treated equal to normal people; more accessible places are desperatly needed. People in wheelchairs really have a tough time getting around, but people with out disabilities take all the access we have for granted. I aspire that soon every thing will be just as accessible for a wheelchair user or anyone with any kind of disability as it is for us.

I thought the presentation was amazing. Debbie and Lawrence were well spoken and easy to understand for our age group. I like the part when Lawrence took off his leg and did the bear crawl. Debbie’s idea of bringing Sarah bear was a nice touch. She also presented Sarah bear’s questions to the class and we passed a string that you pass to a person, which creates a web. The designs on the canes were incredible. The people at Canes Enable are so creative.
I learned that people with disabilities can do so much because before the presentation I thought they were very limited. Debbie and Lawrence showed us that with on leg you can do volleyball, bowling, skiing, dance and lots more things. I also learned about a prosthetic leg. It looks so realistic and very flexible. Having a prosthetic leg allows people to do more but it is so expensive.
I was so surprised that a prosthetic leg cost $40 000. That is the price for a good one. It must be very hard for people to afford one. Having a disability may limit your job possibilities and as Debbie said some disabled people get jobs that do not pay large salaries. How do you afford your bills plus $15 000 to $40 000 for a prosthetic leg. That is why it is good to spread awareness through presentations such as this one.
I think we need for our school to be wheelchair accessible. It has no elevator or ramp. When I was in a wheelchair I could only use it at recess and outside of the school. It was very painful because I had to use crutches up and down the stairs so may times and it was difficult. There was also no handicapped parking and it was hard to get out of the car and into my wheelchair in the drive through. I only had to be in the wheelchair for two months while for some people it is permanent. I really got a good idea of how difficult it is. I would make railings, escalators and elevators in most buildings.
Canes Enable Workshop Response
I thought that the presentation was really cool because we got to learn more about disabilities and we talked with Lawrence about his. I liked how he was so open about his prosthetic leg and how he wasn’t ashamed. I also liked it how Debbie told us about different disabilities and she spread awareness about them.
I learned that so many places in the world are actually not that accessible for people with disabilities and that we need to be more aware of that. Lawrence probed to us that even with one leg he can do almost everything that we can do. He can hop, dance, crawl, ski and do so many other things with just one leg.
I was really surprised that having one leg did not hold him back that much. He was very flexible, and could move around with ease. His prosthetic leg was very different that I expected it to be. In a way it looked very real, and it was very mushy and bendable. All of the different styles of canes were very cool too.
Everyone in the whole world should realize that we actually don’t have that many places that are accessible for people with special needs. We need to start to take action and spread the word. For example, even adding in braille to an elevator or adding in a few more wheel chair parking spaces would make a huge difference. If we do some simple things, it will make a huge difference.

Canes Enable Workshop
Yesterday’s workshop was a very educational and exciting lesson. I learnt many things that I did not know about canes and other things as well. One of the things I learnt was the name of forearm crutches. Another thing I learnt was that handicapped is a derogatory term. I found it very interesting to look at all the kinds of canes people made and to see how they would be helpful to different individuals and I thought that the cane umbrella was very cool. I also enjoyed that second part when we went into a big circle around the canes. Exploring all the ways of transportations from A-Z was fun as well because I had never explored some of the ideas and topics that were brought up.
I think Lawrence is a very inspirational person. I found it was amazing that he was able to get over what happened to him and pursue with what he loves best. I was able to connect with him well because we have a lot in common. He loves skiing and dancing and those are two of my favourite sports.
When I walk around I do not always notice how lucky I am and consider how other people might get around. I think that our school is not very accessible and the narrow cramped hallways do not help anyone at all, especially people who do not get around the same way as I do. I think that a good start to making our school more accessible would be changing our stairs and widening our hallways. From now on I think I will pay closer attention to the accessibility of buildings.

Canes Enable Presentation
Canes Enable Presentation
The “Canes Enable” presentation really moved me and made me realize how lucky I am. I thought that this was the perfect time to start showing us these presentations, because after all there are kids younger than us with disabilities, and living with challenges. I thought Lawrence was a great person to bring in because of all his achievements and because he was so open to talk about his disability. I also thought that Debby was a very good speaker and that she led the program well.
I learned that disability does not prevent sport, dance or art. I learned all about the challenges that come with having a disability. I learned that at a very young age bad things can happen and you have to be careful with whatever you do. I also learned all about people with prosthetic legs and all about prosthetic legs.
One of the things that surprised me was how fast Lawrence took off his leg, and how he was so comfortable with taking it off. Lawrence also surprised me with how well he could balance/walk/dance on one leg. A was so surprised to see all the beautiful paintings on the canes. Lastly I was surprised to hear of all the many problems one with a disability might come across.
Firstly I think it is crazy how inaccessible our school is and how inaccessible our city is compared to others in Canada and the world. I think that this is a major problem that should be brought up more in schools across Canada. I also think that if more people of aware of this problem more people will help.
