What is an essay?

An essay is a written composition on any subject. Writing is a way of communicating. We communicate when we feel the need to share an idea with others. Organizing our thoughts and structuring the way we express them will help us to be better understood. So, in my opinion, when we use an essay to communicate an idea we should carefully choose our words and structure the text such that each paragraph contains no more than one idea.

To explain this opinion I would like to give an example. Say, I was writing an essay about going to the beach. But first let me tell you that my neighbor bought a new bicycle today. His sister mentioned that it was cold outside for this time of the year. My mother says she likes grapefruit but I like chocolate: Even though all of these sentences might be true, putting them all together in one paragraph will have you confused in no time, and wondering what all of this has to do with me wanting to go to the beach. I hope you agree by now, that it’s better to limit yourself to one idea per paragraph.

It is safe to assume that by the time you write an essay you have already made up your mind what it is you are going to write about. Even though you already have a conclusion you would still better start the essay with a beginning, continue to the middle and put your conclusion at the and.

We probably agree that for the sake of clarity we start at the beginning and end at the end. This is rather obvious. Therefore, it makes for great effect if we sometimes deliberately turn this around. You could start an essay at the end and then go back to the beginning. Also, you could interrupt the flow of a story with short episodes of the past. This is typically used in movies and is called a “flash-back”.

How do you prepare for writing an essay? Well, first you decide what the topic should be. An essay could be fiction, as in a short story, it could be historical, it could be scientific. Once you’ve chosen the topic you do some research, trying to learn lots of facts and different perspectives on what it is you want to write about. Next, you write a first draft, you read it back, you don’t like it, you throw it away and you start all over again. You repeat these steps until you think you can do no better. At that stage it is usually very helpful to ask somebody else to read your essay. You want to make sure that what is clear to you is actually also clear to the reader.

In conclusion, writing an essay starts long before you put the first sentence on paper. The writing starts only after you really know what it is you want to write about and how you want to write about it. In other words: hard work and lot’s of fun!

Dani's Whats an Essay

In this essay I will write about the subject of an essay. Even though that sentence may sound a tad bit weird it is true. When writing an essay for the first time it can be very confusing. That is if you don't know how to write it. In the following paragraphs of the essay I will write what an essay is, the make up of the essay, how to plan an essay, and the different types of essays.

An essay is a composition on a subject. These subjects can vary in form but they are always written out, well planed, and take time. It has a title. When written out there are three main parts introduction, body, and conclusion.

The make up of an essay has three parts the introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction introduces the subject of the essay and gets the reader hooked. The body is where all the facts, ideas, and paragraphs go, giving the reader the main points. The conclusion is what sums up the essay and makes a closing.

When planning an essay you start by getting the facts. Then after you have done your research you draw the outline. An outline is when you put your main topics from the body of the essay then your closing and opening. You then write the introduction, and conclusion paragraphs. After that you write the of the body from those main topics which you planned out. Then the introduction and conclusion. You put it all together can get an essay.

There are several different types of essays. Opinion essays, discussion essays, comparison essays, contrast essays, and explanation essays. For different topics or subjects you should use different essay types. You will use all of these types of essays in your future and they are all important.

Now that you know how to write an essay it should be easy. Hopefully you learned as much as I did in this essay. On what an essay is, what are the parts of an essay, how to plan an essay, and the diffrent typs of essays.

My topic sentence paragraph

Out of every fictional character I have ever read about, I would like to meet Harry Potter. I would choose Harry Potter because the first series I ever read was the Harry Potter series so over the years that I have read Harry Potter, I have grown up with him. He is very much alive to me so I feel like I already know him. I also would like to meet him because I would love to hear all the details about Hogwarts that are not in the books.

Topic Sentence

Every week I watch the best program on television, Grey’s Anatomy, which is about a group of doctors with interesting jobs and even more interesting personalities. Izzie is a cardiothoracic surgeon who is always happy and cheerful until she gets cancer and becomes grumpy and annoyed all the time. Meredith is Izzie’s best friend, who is great except for the fact that she brings Izzie down by constantly telling her how upset she is with life. Christina is a brain surgeon and she doesn’t say much, but when she does it’s always dark and spooky. They’re all friends, but they spend a lot of time making each other upset. Together they make a great show, with great personalities to laugh at.

If I could meet any character in the world it would be Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series! I would love to meet Luna Lovegood because she has something different in her then anyone in the Harry Potter series. She knows about the craziest creatures like Crumple-Horned Snorkack, Boggarts and Grindylow. Luna has a curious mind and would be a very interesting person to meet.

Topic Sentence:The day I would like to forget

The first day of kindergarten was different for me (I have just came to Vancouver). My mom took me inside the classroom, and my teacher asked me how old I was, and I said "15" in Hebrew. After that I was so embarrassed, and I ran, and hid behind a door. As a five year old this was, a horrible day.

A day I would like to forget when I accidently went in to the men's bathroom. Right after we got outside we were walking to the parking lot and I said to my dad "I need to go to the washroom!" My dad said "Sure it's right there." So I walked down and I didn't see the men and women sign because I was looking at the clown blowing balloons and making animals. I walked while I watched and I looked at ahead of me and didn't see the signs. I accidently went into the men's bathroom and when I got there I smelled something horrible...! I saw a man and I thought "Where am I?" I realized I was in the men's bathroom. I almost screamed but instead I ran out so I wouldn't see something else. It was the worst time of my life!!

I enjoy playing baseball

Four times a week I am at the baseball diamond playing ball regardless of rain or shine. Although it may seem like a bit much, but I love playing baseball. Every Tuesday I have a practice after school. I have a game every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Baseball is a very fun sport and gives me exercise! Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. However I still love playing the game and that is why it is fine with me playing baseball four days a week.

Violet Boudelaire

From the moment I opened the first page of the first book of The Series of Unfortunate Events I was hooked. But not hooked on just anything. I was hooked on a girl, just a few years older than me. Her name was Violet Baudelaire. There was another part that got me hooked. It was the way Lemony Snicket captures the sorrow of the three Baudelaire orphans. Which still gives me the chills. I would love to meet Violet some day so that she can share her plans of how to leave the source of her misfortune and find a happier way of living. But of course she is just an imaginary character in Lemony Snicket’s mind.

Camp Hatikvah

Camp Hatikvah is one of my favorite places to be. Every year, I step off the bus, memories flooding back from the past years, and I am ready to make more. I love being with all my friends, having fun, not worrying about a thing, just making it the best summer ever. Camp is my home away from home!

Dani's Zip-lining

When you go up to Whistler Mountain you think ski. When I go up to Whistler Mountain I think zip-lining. I love to go zip-lining. You feel the rush of adrenalin right when you step off the ledge. The wind rushing past you as you increase speed on a downhill. When zip-lining you feel as though you are flying and free falling at the same time. Yet going through the trees or open air. You have freedom, it is like nothing you have ever felt before; and I just love it all.

Spongebob Squarepants

Two years ago, I memorized the SpongeBob theme song. Since then, I’ve wanted to meet him in person! Every time I turn on the T.V. I search for SpongeBob on guide. I think I’ve been obsessed with him ever since I realized that his name tells us that he’s a sponge named Bob that wears square pants. I want to meet him because I think we could really be friends! We both have weird laughs, we are kind of spazzy, and both have great friends!

Spending All Summer at Camp

Camp is always the highlight of my summer. I wish I could stay longer. A month at camp Hatikvah is always a blast! Filled with sports, docks and all my friends, you’d think it couldn’t get any better. If only I could stay the whole summer at my favourite camp! Well, I’m not too worried, when I’m a S.I.T I get to stay for the whole summer! Just a couple more years of waiting.

Goku

Goku, an amazing character in a really great show, is a character
I would like to meet. He is the main character in
Dragon Ball Z. Goku has awesome super powers. He can turn
his power level high and low, he flies, he can turn into
an ape, he can shoot blue energy from his
hands, he can draw energy from others and he uses his
powers for good causes.

Every time I go to my locker I get pushed and shoved in the dreaded “old wing”. There’s this hallway in my school that desperately needs to be replaced. There are tons of teachers and students who need to get places on time. Every time your in the hall you get pushed and tripped on because it’s so small and narrow, and there are so many people trying to get through.

Topic sentences

Its never fun playing sports on a gravel field at our school that's why I think we need grass. You always have that urge to be super safe when you are playing sports, so that you won't get rocks or even dust in your eyes. Now you know why we need grass at our school.

The last day of summer!

The last day of Summer!!!
The last day of summer only means one thing to me: school is tomorrow! UH OH......! School.. some people can't wait but I can wait forever. Sitting in a stuffy classroom all day is just not me! On the last day of summer you remember all the fun things you did during the summer, toilet papering cabins at camp, getting into trouble, spending time with your friends, no homework, no parents bugging you (most of the time), and in my case stealing some guy's banana board at the park. For me just the prospect of school after a fun filled summer makes me sad!
