Nobo's Storie

hey guy's i'm writing a book and I want you opinions, thnx! (there might be a few mistakes, just bare with me)

Magee's mind

Staring into the sunset out of my window on the last day of summer, wondering what my new school would be like this year, do they have a girl’s basketball team, will I be popular? But what I was most curios about, was if there was bullying at my new school.

Jumping with fear, I wake up to a very unpleasant sound, the sound of my noisy alarm clock. I walk over to the light switch and turned on the blinding lights and start to get dressed.

“Magee, what do you want for breakfast honey!” mom yelled from downstairs.

“I’ll have oatmeal mom,” I replied back.

By the way my mom and dad are the best of all parents, they bake for me, and they play with me, and they buy food to keep me healthy.

On my way to the first day of school my mom and I are discussing our expectations of the new school that I’m going to. While we reach the school I kiss my mom goodbye and walked into the building with mixed emotions.

After the anthems the class sat down into their desks and everybody introduced themselves by saying their name, where they are from and what their favorite food is. When it was my turn to say

“My name is Magee Anderson” I started.

“That name sounds like your eighty years old!” a girl behind me blurted out.

“Quiet Carla or you will be sent out,” Ms. Marks (my teacher) said.

Trying to ignore the interruption I continued.

“I’m from north Arizona and moved to Vancouver at the end of last summer,”

“No wonder you have that annoying accent!” the girl behind me yelled across the room again.

“I’m warning you Carla,” Ms. Marks demanded with more of a harsh tone. Holding in my tears I carry on.

“And my favorite food is deep fried banana”

“Ha! Your name stinks as much as what you eat, loser” Carla interrupted once more and this time the whole class burst out laughing.

“OUT OF MY CLASSROOM NOW CARLA!” yelled Ms. Marks.

While Carla walked out of the classroom she gave me a look that I will never forget.

Looking at the clock anxious to get out of class Ms. Marks reminded us about our homework for tomorrow. This doesn’t really concern me at the moment because I don’t even know if I’m going to school ever again. Finally, the bell rings.

Putting my binders in my locker I felt a firm grip on my shoulder and the last thing I remembered was my face slamming into a metal surface.

I open my eyes wondering where I was, my entire face in horrible pain and my head throbbing.

“I need to get out of here”, I thought to myself.

I pushed through the crowd and ran into the girl’s washroom, tears streaming down my face. I look into the mirror and stared, what I thought were tears was actually blood. I grab paper towel to soak my face, once I was all cleaned up I stepped out of the washroom and a teacher came rushing to my aid.

“My dear girl what happened to you?” the teacher asked.

“I tripped over my shoelace”, I lied to her

“We must call your parents at once’, the teacher demanded “No, no I’m fine I’ll wait till school ends”, I replied

“Ok, I’ll let you be now and take care of yourself,” she said calmly.

I decided to stay near a teacher for the rest of the day.

The bus ride home I sat at the back of the bus because I wasn’t going near Carla. Watching Carla come onto the bus she shoved another girl out of her spot and sat down. The whole bus ride home I kept my eye on Carla. When it was time for Carla to get off the bus I watched her walk into her home, that very moment was the first time I had felt bad for Carla. I saw that there wasn’t anyone home to make her dinner and her home was the size of my garage. Then I realized how lucky I was to have what I need in life. There was something inside me that made me want to reach out and help Carla.

That night there was something holding me back from telling my mom what happened at school today. I don’t really know what it was maybe she would have reported it to the school and Carla would get even madder at me.

The next morning I woke up to the same things my annoying alarm clock and the same set of clothes waiting for me on my bed and eating the same breakfast again.

Walking into school I feel a little more confident about myself but much more cautious than yesterday. During class Ms. Marks asked us to bring out our homework from yesterday. Carla and I were the only ones that didn’t do it.

During lunch I was sitting at a table all by myself when someone walked up with to me.

“So let me guess, you’ve come here to mess with me haven’t you!” I started at her.

“No actually I was hoping to talk to you about yesterday if you would mind,” the girl replied.

“O, I’m sorry please, sit down,” I said.

“Thank you” she said sitting down.

“Name’s Joel,” she told me.

“I’m Magee, nice to meet you,” I replied.

“Nice to meet you to Magee, so, I think you were really strong to handle what happened yesterday,” Joel told me.

“Thanks, but it sure hurt,” I replied.

“I would imagine it did, anyway you’ve probably figured out that Carla is the school bully,” she said.

“No kidding, what’s wrong with her?” I asked.

“Carla doesn’t live a very good life, her parents are divorced, her mom is severely sick and they can’t afford the experimental medicine to cure her,” she said.

To be continued…

Thanx

ARIEH

friends

hey guys i just wrote this poem. so tell me what you think on it.

Friends

To hold and share,
to always be there.

To laugh and smile,
to stay for awhile.

To wear best friend rings,
or to tell private things.

Just hanging out,
that’s what friends are all about

Chillin in the sun,
or just having fun.

Wear the same trends,
or hanging out on the week ends.

Drinking smoothies,
or watching movies.

By making memories,
that last forever.

World Sickness

World Sickness
By: Arieh Leon Dales

We are going down with the virus
The land of uncertainty
Haunting us in our sleep
It is so perfectly insane
As the waves dig deeper
We feel the pain but do not answer it
All we do is follow the ultimate rule
It runs us
No fixing available
It is too late
The toxic waves slice through our minds
We shall drop as death over comes us
The beat stops the line goes flat
All hope gone all feeling gone
Just the sickly music of the waves
The core destroyed
The delicate temple is no more
It’s all gone except the sliver of light Disappearing slowly but it will be gone soon
We are just robots following the pattern
As the sickness takes over.

Summary

hey mr.g, my computer printer wasnt working so idecided to post the summary due tomorow on the blog.

Every Saturday since April 5th the Blazin’ Soccer Dogs practice from 10:00-12:00 am. Every Saturday morning I go and volunteer for the Blazin’ Soccer Dogs. There are other young people like myself that are helping teach the kids soccer skills and being their friend by encouraging them and cheering them on. A woman in Vancouver has donated all the uniform and soccer balls. Although this is a great deed its more than donating money that matters. I plan to tell lots of young people to come and volunteer. You can also help other people with special needs who aren’t on the team by getting to know them and developing friendship. This act should not be done out of pity but from a belief that you actually want to be there friend.

Entry Number One

Date: Monday May 5, 2008
Time: 3:45 PM to 5:00 (1 hour 15 mins.)
What Was Done:
Today I volunteered for the first time at The Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. After school I went to the JCC with Marc Kalvari because I had a bar mitzvah class at 5:30. Although Marc is not my partner for this project I took this as an opportunity to get some hours in with him. We went down to the centre and we were guided to the library where we quickly got started sorting books so it would be easier for people to find them. Then Frieda came in and told us there was a more important job to be done so we started putting stickers with addresses on envelopes. It was very enjoyable because while we put on the stickers Marc and I got to talk. The time just flew by and it became 5:00 (Closing Time at VHEC). Marc and I left knowing we contributed to Tikkun Olam

Eden's Project

B.C.S.P.C.A.

The British Columbia Society for the Cruelty of Animals is a non-profit organization. It is an organization to help animals. They try to make life better for domestic, farm and wild animals. They provide many different services for 42,000 homeless, abused, injured and abandoned animals. The S.P.C.A. try’s to make sure that the animals have these five freedoms:

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
2. Freedom from pain and disease
3. Freedom from distress
4. Freedom from discomfort
5. Freedom to express behaviors that express well-being

I chose to help animals for many different reasons. First of all there aren’t many people who chose to help animals. Most people chose to help people organizations, which I think is good, but if we all help people then there is no one to help the animals, which is important. Second I think it is very sad what happens to some of these animals. Being abused or homeless is a terrible thing and the S.P.C.A. helps with these problems. Whenever I am looking for a pet I look at the S.P.C.A. first because I know that these animals need a good home after whatever they have been through.

There are many different ways to get involved with the S.P.C.A. Some of the ways that you can get involved is animal socialization or dog walking. If you don’t want to work with animals then you can volunteer at some of the special events. The events include walkathons, adoptathons, open houses and more. If you want to donate some money then you can enter the lottery, which also helps the animals. Vanessa and I are going to walk dogs that are in our neighborhood. We are then use the money that we made walking dogs and buy some dog toys, leashes etc. and donate them to the S.P.C.A.

Isabelle and Mikaela's Project

Jewish Family Services is a non-profit organization. They help people in and outside the Jewish community throughout the lower mainland. Their goal is to make sure every family and individual has a better life to create a better Jewish community. They are committed to the Jewish values and try to have professional service performed by staff and volunteers.

BC has the highest level of poverty, number of working poor who make minimum wage and the number of children living under the poverty line in Canada.
“JFSA served over 7000 clients in our community - the hungry, the homeless, families in crisis, children living in poverty, adults
with mental disabilities, isolated seniors and immigrants struggling to make new lives in Canada. “
It is an organization where Jewish people and others from the community can ask for help.

Mikaela and I chose JFSA for our Tikun Olam project. We chose it because we had an idea that we would do some fundraisers in order to raise money for us to buy some goods such as books and toys for a family in need. So our action plan and JFSA’s cause fit perfectly. Since the organization deals with many families with kids who can’t afford to buy certain goods, we felt it would be a great mitzvah to surprise one of the families with a basket full of presents from an anonymous donor.

There are many things kids can do to support JFSA but I am only going to mention one of them. What kids can do is make either a bake sale, lemonade stand or some sort of fundraiser that would raise money for your cause. After you have finished with fundraising, go to stores that sell goods for families such as toy stores, book stores, video stores, grocery stores etc. and buy some things or gift certificates with the money you raised. Then put all of the goods into a nice basket and give it to JFSA to donate it to one of the needy families.

The Blazin Soccer Dogs

The Blazin’ Soccer Dogs is a soccer team that was started by Abbe Gates and her daughter Sadie. What makes this soccer team unique is the story behind the founding of the team. “Last September the 11 year old girl with Down Syndrome was getting ready to play soccer when a coach cut her as someone who could not help the team” – The Province Newspaper. Sadie’s mom was outraged by this discrimination and promised herself and her daughter that she will start her own soccer team that would include children who have been excluded from sports because of their special needs. Abbe has recruited 31 children for the team along with 18 volunteers which includes myself.

I chose to be a part of this new team because of my love for soccer and because I believe these children with special need deserve just as much fairness as anyone. When my mother told me about this story I felt sympathy for the cause and wanted to get involved. Another reason is because my brother has special needs and my mother works in that area.

Every Saturday since April 5th the Blazin Soccer Dogs practice from 10:00-12:00 am. Every Saturday I go and volunteer for the Blazin Soccer Dogs. There are other young people like myself that are helping teach the kids soccer skills and being their friend by encouraging them and cheering them on. covenant house

Covenant house is a place that helps teenagers that are on the street because of abuse or homelessness or other problems.  Covenant House takes the teens in, gives them a place to stay, gives them food and shelter, and collects toys, games, clothes, and other things that these teenagers need. Covenant House Vancouver opened in September 1997 in response to a study reporting that British Columbia had more than 10,000 runaways annually.

The Vancouver Covenant House helps teenagers by providing them with food, clothing, shelter and counseling to the about 1,000 street youth in Vancouver.

I chose this because Bayle, who is working with me, already has some knowledge about it and I feel I can connect to it because Covenant House helps teenagers who are around my age.  I also think it is not fair to leave kids homeless just because they were born to a bad family.  I hope that if I had that problem, someone would help me.

To support this organization young people can volunteer in the kitchens or other things they need help with.  They can also help out with some of the safer teenagers in the Covenant House.  You can also donate old clothes and games that you aren’t using.  You can just be friendly and nice to a person your age to try and cheer them up and give them support.  Kids can help raise awareness so that other people might help too.

Richmond Mental Health Consumer and Friends Society

By Alex and Aviva

The organization we chose is the Richmond Mental Health Consumer and Friends Society. This organization provides individual assistance to people who are recovering from a mental health illness and are receiving mental health services. The assistance will help people who take advantage of the programs to enhance their lives and succeed in reaching their personal goals. The assistance is provided by peer support workers who have been trained and have personal experiences with mental health illness. All of the workers provide support and encouragement in the stages of recovery from mental health illnesses. The relationship between a peer and a support worker usually lasts sixth months or until their goals are reached.

We chose this organization because we wanted to raise awareness about mental health illness. We felt that by volunteering at Richmond Mental Health Consumer and Friends Society we would be able to understand what it is like to live with a mental illness. We also wanted to understand the purpose of this organization by being able to meet people who have overcome their mental illness and have made strides toward reaching their personal goals.

Young people can help this organization by participating in daily activities such as going on walks, helping to make the participants lunches, playing fun games and drawing with them. We are also participating in weekly sessions’ along with Alex’s mother to learn how to improve people with mental illnesses life styles.

The main purpose of this project is to learn a way in which we can make a difference in the world. One way of reaching our goal is to help the people with mental illnesses overcome their problems. Hopefully we will be able to touch some of these people and help in some small way to improve their lives.

We are very excited to be involved in this important project. We are going to be able to help people and have fun at the same time. If everyone in our class just does a small mitzvah it will help make other peoples lives a little better.

Interview summary

Interview Summary

By Benny

Today I interviewed Harry Reay. In this engaging interview process, involving past, present and future, I discovered that drawing, reading, watching T.V., and playing video games aren’t Harry’s only extra curricular activities.  His main ones are floor hockey and ice-skating.

IN this intriguing conversation I found out that one of his sports, skating, runs in the family and that Harry is not planning to stop that.  He has also made the effort to help his little brother and sister with their skating as well.

With his hockey skills and skating speed his un-injured career is going strong and is not going to stop any time soon. Even though Harry can’t practice these sports at home, he still manages to perform his best in his 1½ hours of playing these sports a week. When this short hour and a half elapses, Harry doesn’t wish to fill his spare time with other sports because he loves his current ones so much.

One thing that I learned about Harry in this interview is that his love for his activities is extremely remarkable, and that it would be hard for anyone to match his passion and determination for the games he plays.

My Tikkun Olam Summary

JFSA

I picked the JFSA. Founded in 1936, is a non-profit social service organization, which helps the Jewish community of the lower mainland. They provide items that are useful for Jews. They help Jews any way they can. They help over 7000 people annually.

They help Jews with what they need, and help the less unfortunate Jews. It is a good resource for Jews that need financial aid or if you are a senior. They help children and find people jobs.

I chose JFSA because I wanted to help someone that I could relate to. I also know

people whom they have helped, and seen how they treated them. It shows me how they help, so I want to be a part of it.

There are many ways of volunteering at JFSA. Such as Administration Support, Friendly visitors, JFSA Board Member, Shopping Assistance, Special events, and Transportation services. You could also raise awareness or raise money.

BC Children's Hospital Foundation (BCCHF)

The BC Children's Hospital is an organization that helps kids all over BC with all sorts of medical issues and injuries, such as cancer, rehabilitation, terminal illnesses, Down syndrome, broken or fractured bones and muscles tears, rips and pulls. They have many volunteers for kids with terminal illnesses and kids in rehab. Kids can volunteer there as well as adults. There are many jobs kids can do there like help clean up waiting rooms, talk to younger kids and make them feel good and so on. The hospital also cares for all their patients to the best of their abilities which are excellent.

I chose this cause because they have many ways to donate, volunteer, they have great doctors and nurses and they are repairing they world by helping sick kids get better faster and easier. Like i said before they have many ways to donate. Some ways are: blankets, clothes, shoes, bracelets, movies, toys, blood, organs and of course your time and money. Another reason I chose this cause is because it is easy to get involved and to donate. I think BCCHF has done amazing things for children ad will only get better at helping children across BC.

Did you know...
BC Children’s Hospital receives more than 168,000 visits by patients each year from sick and injured children from across the province.
We are the only pediatric health centre and teaching hospital in B.C., and the largest full-service child health centre in Canada.
11,000 children in B.C. require surgery for life-threatening injury and illness. The number continues to grow.
1,100 children are treated each year at BC Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the only one in the province.
In 2006/07, 37,653 children visited BC Children’s Emergency Room. That’s more than 103 sick kids every day.
400 children and their families visit BC Children’s for treatment and care every day.
200 open-heart surgeries are performed every year. Twenty-five per cent of those difficult surgeries are performed on patients younger than one year old.
BC Children’s Hospital has the most comprehensive renal team in western Canada and performs an average of 14 kidney transplants each year.
There are 150 newly diagnosed cases of childhood cancer in the province each year. BC Children’s treats more than 8,000 youngsters with cancer on an outpatient basis.
Nearly 20 bone marrow transplants are performed each year at BC Children’s Hospital.
One in every 100 children in B.C. is born with heart disease, and all of them are treated at BC Children’s Hospital.
54,000 diagnostic imaging procedures are conducted in Radiology, which operates the only pediatric MRI scanner in B.C.
2,345,492 laboratory tests are conducted and 261,075 prescriptions are filled each year at BC Children’s Hospital.
These facts were taken directly from the sight because I couldn't choose which to tale and which to leave.

Variety club is an organization that distributes much needed funding to children, and their families, with special needs throughout B.C.. Variety receives over 1,000 requests for financial assistance, medical emergencies, therapies, and equipment yearly. Variety tries to grant all these wishes with there constant volunteer work, emergency response funds, community fund raisers, and there major yearly events, such as: The Show of Hearts Telethon, BC Bowls for Kids, Children’s Radio-thons, Gold Heart Day, and Boat for Hope. Just to name a few.

Not only does Variety encourage and support young volunteers, but it goes the extra mile with having its own program, Young Variety. This program provides opportunities to young adults (19-29) to improve on there leadership and networking skills. Even though people under the age of 19 cant participate the program, Variety still opens its doors to young children who would like to volunteer, and gives support and learning experiences that will expand there charitable horizons for there future.

I proudly chose this cause for many reasons, but one unparticular was that my family has bean involved in this organization for many generations. Starting with my great grandfather, Irving Levenson, who was president of Variety for many years. Now me, and I’m trying to make my mark in Variety starting this year with my Tikkun Olam project.

aids

Aids
By: Aleesha and Adi

What the Organization Does

The organization is called: The Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Greater Vancouver (ANH).ANH was originally founded in 1894, in England. In B.C., ANH has opened a hospital, an orphanage, a “fresh-air camp,” a neighbourhood house and more recently an association of seven neighbourhoods’ houses and outdoor center

What the cause is.

Our cause is aids. Aids is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Some people get fever, headache, sore muscles and joints, stomach ache, swollen lymph glands, or a skin rash for one or two weeks. The virus will multiply in your body for a few weeks or even months before your immune system responds. There is no cure for AIDS. There are drugs that can slow down the HIV virus, and slow down the damage to your immune system. There is no way to "clear out" HIV from the body.

Why did we choose this cause?

We choose this cause because we knew what it does to people. Also it affects a huge part of the population. We thought that it would be an amazing experience to really understand what aids is, and learn more about it. Also to help out the children that are infected with the HIV virus.
What can young people do besides raising money?

Young people can help the organization by doing things like:

1. volunteer as a tutor,

2. be a mentor,

3. become a peer tutor,

4. volunteer as a cook,

5. Play with the kids,

6. Make bracelets,

7. playing with them,

and drawing with them.

Harry and Tomers' Tikkun Olam essay part 1

For our Tikkun Olam Project, we chose the St Paul’s Hospital. St Paul’s is BC’s only centre for highly specialized services like heart transplants and hearing implants. St Paul’s Hospital Foundation raised a record $10.11 million for equipment, research and patient care in 2006 through 2007. Also, St Paul’s is a main teaching hospital located in downtown Vancouver. The hospital is part of PHC (Province Health Care); the biggest group of wide spreading operated health care facilities in Canada.

St Paul’s Hospital Foundation is a registered charity that raises funds for medical equipment, medicine research and superior patient care at St Paul’s and helps to cultivate relationships and partnerships in Vancouver's community to generate financial and related resources to improve St Paul's capability to help people.

St Paul’s Hospital Foundation raises funds for equipment, research and improved patient care. St Paul's current needs include funds for special initiatives in the Heart Centre/ Providence Heart and Lung Institute at St Paul’s Hospital, the Emergency Department, Palliative Care and the Providence Health Care Research Institute. St Paul’s also provides education grants for nurses.

Kids can help by donating any amount of money, which makes a big difference around the hospital. If you want to volunteer at the hospital's special events, please call 604-682-8206.If you want to help/ volunteer around the hospital, please call 604-806-8279 for more info.

U.B.C. Farm at the University of British Columbia

The main purpose of the farm is to keep and re-create existing farm and forest lands at the University of British Columbia into an internationally important center for agriculture, forestry and food systems that can be self sufficient.

I chose this organization because I think it is important to keep our earth, living and healthy. I also enjoy getting dirty, using my hands and working hard.

Young people like me can support U.B.C. Farms by going there and either planting and/or picking the crops rather than just donating money. This is how the organization builds a strong, local community.

I can make a difference, by proving that doing helpful deeds can make the world a more enriched and healthy place to live.

The class may be interested to know, that every Saturday from June 4th to September 24th, between 9am and 1pm the U.B.C. Farm holds a market where one can buy 60 different types of produce that has been grown on their land.

Matt&Noah's Tikkun Olam Summery

Matthew and Noah chose Special Olympics because it is a world wide organization made to help people with intellectual disabilities create self-confidence, social skills and makes them feel proud from their personal accomplishments. On top of their daily activities, Special Olympics host the Special Olympics World Games every four years. More than 2.5 million athletes of all ages participate in Special Olympics sports training and compete in more than 180 different countries. The organization offers a whole year of training and competitions in 30 Olympic summer and winter sports.

Special Olympics cause is to help people with disabilities participate in world wide games. Special Olympics enrich people with disabilities to have the experience of participating in sports. This organization allows individuals to compete with people that are like them. They get the chance to feel the emotions of winning, losing and to compete, which probably is a new experience for them. Noah and Matt are going to interview one of the athletes and get to tell you the experience of a real athlete in the Special Olympics.

Matthew and Noah wanted to experience what its like to help people different from us using our sports skills. So we found the Special Olympics organization. Matthew and I thought this was a very powerful organization that we can relate to (sports wise). Matthew and I wanted to choose an organization that we could physically meet and help the people we are helping, and that is why we chose the Special Olympics organization.

Matthew and Noah are not giving money we are going to physically help and get to play with these athletes that aren’t like us. Noah and I are going to have a great time participating and meeting these people. We are excited to get involved in this organization and leave wit a new experience. We are looking forward to helping these people in this organization.

Hey Mr. G this is Sari and Galia's tikkon olam project.

The Lipstick Brigade

I wash my hair every day, I clean my body every day and I brush my teeth every day twice a day. Imagine not being able to wash your hair, to clean your body or even to brush your teeth. You might not realize it but in this world there are people who can’t afford these simple cosmetics. The organization I am participating in is called The Lipstick Brigade. The Lipstick Brigade collects cosmetics and donates them to homeless shelters. People can go to the homeless shelter and use the cosmetics, feel good and not be ashamed about the way they look, or unhappy about the way they feel.

I chose this organization because whenever I brush my hair in the morning with a simple brush I feel good about myself and ready for the new day. When I heard about how some people can’t afford simple brushes like mine I didn’t think it was fair because I think it is important for everyone to be able to have personal hygiene. That is why I decided to help out with the Lipstick Brigade.

Young people can help the Lipstick Brigade, by volunteering their time, not by raising money. Two examples of giving their time are: They can help organize, package and distribute the cosmetics donated by other people. They can also help by spreading the word to friends and family, asking them that when they go away to a hotel to bring back the little bottles of shampoo, soap and conditioner. There are many other ways kids can help the Lipstick Brigade. All it takes is a little creative thinking and a few hours.

St. Paul's Hospital by Adina

Description of Saint Paul’s Hospital Foundation

The St. Paul's Hospital Foundation raises money to purchase equipment for patients, support research and advance patients care at Saint Paul’s hospital. Saint Paul’s hospital is an academic health science center in downtown Vancouver. Saint Paul’s hospital serves patients from downtown Vancouver, the city of Vancouver and the entire province. Saint Paul’s hospital specializes in five main areas. These are HIV/ AIDS, cardiac disease, renal disease, elder care and mental health. In addition to looking after patients Saint Paul’s hospital is a center for research and medical education. The Saint Paul’s hospital foundation raises money to support all these areas.

I decided to choose Saint Paul’s hospital foundation because I am familiar with the work they perform because my dad works there. Another reason I chose Saint Paul’s is because I wanted to find a way to help people who are ill. I hope that by me helping out at the foundation I can help make a difference in these people’s lives.

At Saint Paul’s kid are not allowed to directly help out with patients for numerous reasons. But there is much more kids can do than helping patients directly. The Saint Paul’s foundation raises money which goes to help patients. In order to do this they have to do a lot of office work. This includes sending mail outs, filing things, phoning people, designing pamphlets and other forms of advertising. Kids can help with all of these activities.

My plan is to volunteer my time there helping them with these fund raising activities. I want to be there to help with what ever they want me to do and I am going to bring work home so I can get even more work done. I am also planning to bake goods and sell them, then give the money to the foundation for them to improve the emergency room which is very old and needs to be renovated.

So far I have already learned a lot about Saint Paul’s hospital ; I know now what they do to help people and what they need to improve on. I am very happy I chose this foundation because I am confident that what they do is very important.

Today I interviewed Lindsay Grasso. I asked her eleven questions about her extracurricular life past and present. I learnt a lot about Lindsay that I had never known about her.

Lindsay started dancing and singing at a very young age, when she was only two years old. She wishes she had started doing gymnastics when she was younger. Currently Lindsay participates in two sports, she does dance and karate. She does both of these sports in programs at the Jewish Community Center. She dances for one and a half hours and does karate for one hour each week.

I already knew that Lindsay was a dancer because Lindsay and I are in the same Jazz dance class – and we’ve been in the same dance classes before at the JCC. She’s a great dancer!

When I asked Lindsay what her hobbies were, she said dancing, singing and acting. She’s obviously done lots of interesting extra curricular activities and still is.

National Council of Jewish Women

The NCJW is an organization that does many programs that help people such as: books for kids, operation dress up, wellness program, kosher meals on wheels, Jewish book fair and many more. I am personally volunteering for books for kids.
Books for kids is a program that collects used books that are in good condition. It gives them to kids in schools who don’t have enough money to buy their own books.
I chose this organization because it is a really good cause. In our class we get to read for 25 minutes each day and I think it must be really horrible for kids not to have books to read. I also chose this program because I can really connect to it because the children who I am giving the books to are my age.
Kids can support this organization by donating books they no longer read. They can also put their time and effort into volunteering to help sort and deliver the books to the schools in need. They can also help by raising awareness about this program.

5. Do your parents do any of the same activities as you? No my mom is training for a marathon.

6. What it your favorite sport to play? My favorite sport to play is ice hockey.

10. If you could do it differently what activity would you have started when you were younger? I would have started ice hockey earlier.

Summary

I found this project very interesting. What I found out was that girls and boys in our class do very different activities, for instance my favorite activity is cheerleading and Max’s favorite activity is ice hockey. There are not many similarities between cheerleading and ice hockey. The one similarity that I did find is that we both enjoy playing team sports. I think that is because team sports are more social than if you are doing a sport by yourself. Something else I found out is that Max and his mom do more of the same activities than Max and his sister. Max does fitness classes and ice hockey. His mom also does fitness classes but his sister only does dance.

In this project we learned many things about each others’ after school activities. One thing I noticed was when the question came up about if you could have done it all over again what activities would you have started when you were younger, Max and I both chose our favorite sport that we love doing now. I think that is because we thought that if we started in that sport earlier then we would be better at it now.
Another thing I have noticed by doing this project is that Max uses most of his time playing ice hockey, and he really enjoys it. That is a really good thing because when you are doing a sport many hours a week like Max, it is good for you to you love that sport so much or you will be wasting your time with something that is not so fun for you to do. Interview Paragraph (6B)

Today I interviewed Mr. Benny Freedman about his extracurricular activities. I found out about Benny’s past and present (private) life. (Just kidding!!!). We had an intriguing conversation about after school activates.

I found out that Benoit not only likes sports, sports and more sports, but also music (especially guitar).

Benny started playing baseball at the (extremely young) age of 3 (except he was playing T-ball) and has been improving his game (pitching and al). And since then, it quickly became his favorite sport (main reason because it is a strategic game). He plays it 4 times a week (no wonder he gets injured a lot).

If Benny could, he would have gone back in time and have changed his decision to ice hockey (because his parents won’t let him play it now).

Also, I learned that Benny’s favorite hobby is sports. He has been playing sports for as long as he can remember.

Everyday he has a sport (no time for homework?). If Benny could, he would have wanted to change his favorite hobby to guitar, because he would have more practice than he has now.

Danny's Summary

Summary
My name is Danny Greenberg, and today I interviewed Taya Polo. I learned a lot about her from before she was living in Vancouver and from in the present. When she was young she decided to play soccer at age five because she saw her sister playing it and wanted to too. Then at age seven she started to take lessons. When Taya was four years old she was inspired to do gymnastics because she saw people performing it on the TV and she really liked it.

When Taya was eight years old, she moved from Edmonton to Vancouver, and decided to stop playing soccer. Last year she stopped doing gymnastics and took up non-competitive dance. Most of the people in her dance class were nice and cooperative, but some were mean and not fun. Her activities take place for the whole year except in the summer. Taya also wants do to the yoga classes at the school.

Taya is planning to do all of her activities again next year and might start one or two more. If she could change anything about her past in extracurricular activities, she would have kept with gymnastics and that she started the yoga classes in grade five.

Interview Summary

Interview Summary

Today I interviewed Jacob K. It was very interesting to learn about what he does outside of school. In Jacob’s free time he enjoys playing hockey, soccer, basketball, football and he also enjoys martial arts and playing the guitar. Jacob does each of these activities once a week and states that every week he learns how to improve his skills.

In the past Jacob was enrolled in swimming lessons, hockey and soccer. Jacob no longer does swimming lessons because he had already learned how to swim independently. Jacob still enjoys in participating in hockey and soccer weekly.

In the beginning of these paragraphs I mentioned that Jacob was enrolled in Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Football, martial arts and playing the guitar. These are not only his extracurricular activities they are his hobbies as well. Although he enjoys all of his hobbies his favorite one is hockey because it involves constant movement. Jacob had trouble choosing which hobby he was best at so he decided to choose two, which are martial arts and hockey.

The last question I asked Jacob was “If you could go back in time what would you want to be enrolled in”. Jacob answered guitar so that he could progress more when he was older. Overall it sounds like Jacob has a lot of fun during his free time.

Marc Levin’s Summary for Our Practice Interview

Marc Levin’s Summary for Our Practice Interview

In my practice interview I interviewed Mikaela Ergas-Lenett about her past and present extracurricular life. Just to reflect for a bit, I found it very interesting to interview a girl because I got to see what little girls where doing at a young age.

When Mikaela was younger she was doing ballet, tap, drawing,. Sadly, now she is doing only drawing. Because of a major increase of homework over the past years Mikaela has had less time to do extracurricular activities.

Even though Mikaela didn’t pursue the majority of her child activities, she is doing different ones, like, cheerleading, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, drawing and acting, because she wanted a change in her activities.

If Mikaela could go back in time she would have kept on going with ballet, because it would have helped her with her dances that she is doing today. Also if she could have started an activity earlier it would have been cheerleading.

Homework

First part of T.O. project write up due on Wednesday. Make sure it is polished and proofread. Remember, this will be going in your portfolio so it needs to be written formally without any slang at all.

Please also remember to bring in your parent permission forms for me on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Holocaust Education Center

The Holocaust Education Center helps educate kids and adults about the Holocaust. It has a library that only has books about the Holocaust. So you can take out books that will give you a lot of information about the Holocaust. The exhibit going on right now talks about the Nuremberg trials, which were the trials that convicted many war criminals of the Holocaust.

I chose this organization because, I have already been volunteering at the Holocaust Center for eight months. So I thought it would be nice to do a project about it. I like the Holocaust center because I think it’s important for people to know about the Holocaust. What will happen when all the Holocaust survivors are gone it will be are job to tell there stories so the memories never die.
There’s lot’s of ways to get involved. You can volunteer there a couple of hours a week. You can also become a member to help support the museum. Another great mitzvah would be to donate money to fund exhibits. I hope I have explained about the Holocaust Center and what it does.

music poem draft 1

I guys tell me how you like this poem. PLEASE! If anyone can give me ideas for a good title and some way to end the last stanza but still to keep it rhyming.

music through my ear
what else can I hear
with the bark
of linkin park
as I use the beat
of my feet
to dance along
to this awesome song
as I dance along
to this awesome song
I pass bye
and catch some eyes
as my ears are blasting
to this song that is ever lasting
I listen to the final words
and look outside at the birds
as the birds tweet away
to the beat that plays
the song ends

Tzedakah by Galia

Tzedakah
Tzedakah Versus Charity
Before we had our first lesson on Tzedakah, I thought Tzedakah and charity meant the same thing. I thought they both meant giving to people who weren’t as fortunate as someone else. But then I found out more about these two words and realized that in Jewish terms there is a greater definition to each action. Tzedakah means giving from your heart. When someone is giving Tzedakah, they are giving it not because they are asked to, but because they want to. Charity, on the other hand, is giving but not always from the heart.

Levels Of Tzedakah
There are many levels of Tzedakah. These levels were described by Maimonides (Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon) who was born in the12th century. He was a Jewish scholar and physician. Maimonides wrote that there are eight different levels of tzedakah. The list below, describes them from the least to the most holy.
8. When someone donates unwillingly.
7. When someone is happy to give less than he should.
6. When someone gives directly to the poor only because they were asked.
5. When someone gives directly to the poor without being asked.
4. When the person receiving knows who the donor is, but the donor does not know who the receiver is.
3. When the donor knows who the receiver is, but the receiver does not know who the donor is.
2. When the donor doesn’t know who the receiver is and the receiver doesn’t know who the donor is.
1. The highest form of tzedakah is to help someone get a job so they don’t have to depend on others for money.

Can Kids Perform Tzedakah?
In my opinion, a child can perform tzedakah in many ways. On one hand a child can perform tzedakah just like an adult. If a child has been taught the meaning and the reason for tzedakah, then their tzedakah is appreciated in the same way as an adult. On the other hand if a child does not know the meaning of tzedakah then the child’s actions would be considered charity. For example, if a four year old finds a quarter on the floor in a grocery store, picks it up and puts it into the Research for Juvenile Diabetes container at the checkout counter, would that be considered Tzedakah? The answer is no. This would be considered charity as it is a learned behaviour not an act from the heart. If this same four year old is taught about the meaning of tzedakah, even in simple terms that she could understand, and then acts on this knowledge that would be tzedakah. For example, with the knowledge she has been given, she then decides to sort through a box of her old toys, pick out her favourite ones and ask her Mom to take her to the JFSA to give to other children who don’t have any toys, this would be tzedakah.

What Does Tzedakah Have To Do With Judiasm?
I think Tzedakah has a lot to do with Judiasm. For example, in Judiasm we get taught to live each and every day for the good in our lives not for the bad. So we also get taught to put good into other peoples’ lives. In some of the Jewish holidays we have special foods that we eat but a lot of those foods that we eat on those holidays we also donate to the poor. In Judiasm when we give tzedakah we remind ourselves that we have been given a lot but we still have much more to give.

How Should Tzedakah Be Given?
When this question was presented in our classroom, my first reaction was blank. But then when we started learning about these concepts, I realized there are many ways that Tzedakah should be given. One of the concepts was Tzedakah should be given without being asked. When you are asked, it is not you who thought about it in the first place. Something else that I learnt is that in Judiasm you are supposed to give at least 10% of your profits. The reason is if you give less you are not as generous as you can afford to be, but if you give too much you may not have enough for yourself. A third concept that I learnt is giving of your time not just money. For example, if you went to help out at the Louis Brier, that would be giving of your time. There are many other ways we can do Tzedakah and fill other peoples’ lives with goodness. It’s taking the moment to think about it and then just doing it.

Tzedakah

1. Levels of Tzedakah

Here are the eight levels of Tzedakah. The best way is the last one.

1) Giving but regretting it
2) Giving, but less than someone should
3) Giving, but only because you are being asked to
4) Giving before being asked to
5) Giving without knowing who you’re giving to,
although the person who you’re giving to knows
who’s giving
6) Giving anonymously
7) Giving but not to receive
8) Giving someone something that will help them
become independent, like a job or a loan

2. Can kids perform Tzedakah?

Yes kids can perform Tzedakah, actually anyone can perform Tzedakah even non Jewish people can. You can pay one cent and it would be Tzedakah you can pay ten million dollars and obviously it would be Tzedakah.

3. Ways to give Tzedakah

There are many, many ways to give Tzedakah. That is because Tzedakah doesn’t always have to be money. You can give everything from a gift to volunteering for a local cause, for example the SPCA or Canuck place.

4. Charity vs. Tzedakah

A lot of people would say that charity and Tzedakah are the same thing, but to me and probably many other people they are not even close. Charity is only given when the person feels like it, but Tzedakah is given anytime, anyplace, any mood. No matter what you give, if you give from the heart it will always count.

Tzedakah Essay

Charity vs. Tzedakah

Before Mondays lesson I thought Tzedakah was the same as giving charity. I now realize that was incorrect. Charity comes from the Latin word “caritas” which means “from the heart”. This word describes charity perfectly. Charity is given from the heart whenever you want to give. This all depends on how you are feeling. Some days you will feel charitable and some you won’t; what will the poor do on those days? This is where Tzedakah works its magic. Tzedakah comes form the Hebrew word “justice”. According to Jewish tradition Tzedakah does not rely on your impulses. Tzedakah can be performed whether you are feeling right or not. Doing Tzedakah can include giving our time, our talent and our money. Giving your time could be volunteering at a soup kitchen to help feed the hungry. Giving your talent can include bikathons, phonathons, walkathons, telethons, phonathons, and raffles to raise money for the poor. All these examples show that Tzedakah is not only donating money but it be something that you can enjoy and still help the needy.

Levels of Tzedakah

The Rambam defined eight different levels of giving Tzedakah starting from least and moving towards most praiseworthy. Below is Rambam’s list beginning with the least praiseworthy form.

1) Give not wanting to and with regret.

2) Giving nicely but not as much as one should

3) Giving what one should but only does it after being asked

4) Giving before being asked

5) Giving without knowing the identity of the recipient, although the recipient knows the identity of the donor

6) Giving anonymously and knowing the identity of the recipient.

7) Giving without knowing the identity of the recipient, and the recipient not knowing the identity of the donor.

8) Helping the recipient get a job so he/she no longer rely on someone else for money.

Can Kids perform Tzedakah? Why or why not?

Tzedakah does not only have to do with the amount of money you give. To me this means that kids can make an equal gift to the world as adults. It all depends on the level of understanding the child has. One child could decide to perform a small Tzedakah act and another might decide to do something that could influence many people. Therefore kids can make an equal impact in the world of Tzedakah as adults. Kids are also able to do many things in the fulfillment of Tzedakah because they have more free time available to them then adults.

How should Tzedakah be given?

Tzedakah should be given with a full heart every day. Tzedakah should be given with a positive attitude. We give Tzedakah to realize how lucky we really are and that we need to give to others that are not as lucky. I believe that by giving Tzedakah with a full heart on a daily basis it will help improve the lives of people in need.

Does Tzedakah have anything to do with Judaism?

Tzedakah comes form the Hebrew word justice. The Talmud introduces us to Tzedakah and teaches us about it. Giving Tzedakah is a wonderful deed and does not only make you feel good about your self, but it also gives the recipients joy and happiness in their lives. On many Jewish holidays it is a mitzvah to give Tzedakah. This shows that as well as praying and thanking Hashem for the meal/occasion we give Tzedakah. I believe that that the gift of Tzedakah is a big part of Judaism, but helping others plays a role in other religions as well as in making all of us righteous members of humanity.
