POETRY RESPONSE: NEW EYES

October 28, 2007

Aviva 6A

POETRY RESPONSE: NEW EYES

The poem New Eyes was a very descriptive and well written poem. I thought that Adrienne Jaeger did such a fine job with the change of heart she used. This poem really helped me to write my own poem using the same technique. When she said “I spy books scattered through his pile of belongings, But each with a tattered binding or missing cover, but every page well loved” I thought this was very creative. It came to my mind right away that he was looking around for books since he loved to read, instead of begging for money.

I especially liked the beginning. It gave me a perfect mental picture of a crowded hot day on Madison Avenue. Then at the end she repeated the beginning again but differently. The ending lines were very much the same as the start of the poem, but with the new idea of “looking ahead with new eyes”. The first time I read the poem I did not see the last sentence “with new eyes”. Then when Mr. Gelmon read it I had a totally different perspective of the poem. You might say I saw it, “with new eyes.”

One of my favorite stanzas is the third one because Adrienne Jaeger described the man so well that you knew right away that he was a homeless and grubby guy. Then she explained him even better in the fourth stanza. This helped me understand that he was a frustrated careless guy. But then I read the fifth and sixth stanzas and noticed he actually is not a grubby boring homeless gut but a guy who loves to read.

I enjoyed how Adrienne Jaeger wrote this poem. After finishing it I was really inspired to right my own poems.

The True Story Of The Emperor’s New Clothes

“49,789.27?” exclaimed the Emperor!
“It doesn’t matter how much you spend, the people can’t see very well any way,” his advisor told him.
“It doesn’t matter what the people think, it matters what you think,” contradicted the salesperson from D&G.
“Good point, I’ll take them.”
“Here you go,” said the Emperor as he handed the salesperson the money.
“And here you go,” said the salesperson while handing the Emperor his new clothes.

Back at D&G headquarters…
“I can’t believe you sold that outfit, for that much, we almost gave it to Salvation Army,” said the manager
“Well the Emperor is really dumb,” replied the salesperson.
“Good work.”

At the parade…
“I wonder where the Emperor is,” whispered one of the townspeople.
“I see him,” said another.
“Wow, I wonder why he’s wearing such old clothes?” asked another townsperson.
“Yeah,” replied another.

“Emperor, why are you wearing clothes from the 1950’s,” screamed a little boy.
“What?” yelled the Emperor back.
“Your clothes, they’re ancient,” said the boy.
“That salesperson, I’m going to get him
Back at the palace…
“Advisor, I thought you said that the townspeople couldn’t see?” asked the Emperor.
“I’m fired right.”
“No, but you are going to pay for those clothes.”
“$50,000?” the advisor said to himself.
“I don’t make that much in a year.”

Poem response on dolphins at sea

Poetry Response on Dolphins at Sea

I thought that Nifco wrote a poem with a twist, because for the first 3 stanzas it was just like relaxing on the beach, and the last 4 stanzas it was like seeing something terrible.
When Nifco says swim away, In the 2nd stanza she puts a huge line break in, I think that when Nifco does that first you think of a dolphin swimming around near the beach, and then you think of a dolphin going away from the beach. Nifco does the same thing in the 3rd stanza, when she writes racecar and jump. Nifco also repeats the 1st stanza twice. The only part I didn’t understand was the last stanza. This poem was free verse, and had 7 stanzas. I rate it a 4.5 out of 5. It’s a great poem.

Sit

My aunt says that where you
stand depends on where you
sit.

I don’t get it, I say,
confused.

Auntie asks,
You know the girl who always cries in class?

Yes, I say, thinking how she is so
babyish.

Her parents are getting divorced.

Oh, I say,
feeling bad for her.

And you know that boy who
always pushes or hits you?

Yes, I say,
thinking how that boy is such a meanie.

He likes you.

Oh, I say, feeling a bit
uncomfortable.

And you know how your dad laughs like
a monkey sometimes?

Yes I say, thinking how he can be
so embarrassing.

He does that when he’s nervous.

Oh, I say,
thinking about how anxious he can get.

And you know the girl who
always gets perfect in everything?

Yes, I say,
thinking how annoying she can be.

She loses sleep worrying about
everything.

Oh, I say,
thinking how awful that must be.

And you know the boy who always
blames you for something he does?

Yes, I say, thinking how
self-centered he can be.

He has health issues.

Oh, I say,
thinking how hard it must be for him.

You know the teacher who always
criticizes you?

Yes, I say, thinking how she can be
a meanie, too.

She does that because she knows
you can do better.

Oh, I say,
thinking how sort of nice that is.

And then I tell my aunt
that maybe there are times
when it’s a good idea
to move chairs

Sit somewhere else, you know?

Drug addict (prejudice poem)

I catch a glimpse of a man
trying to get money
he had a cigarette
perched in his mouth

But the man was carrying a bag with letters on it
inside a bit of money
he's what I call a drug addict-

a drug addict who asks for money
a drug addict who is dirty
a drug addict who doesn't care about life but only drugs

he turns and faces me
he looks away
as he sees my eyes

I pass the drug addict quickly, with disgust
wandering why he wonted money
was it for drugs?

when I look back with the question in mind
my jaw jrops when I see the letters on the bag:
money for cancer research.

I catch a glimpse of a man
trying to get money
he had a cigarette
perched in his mouth

he was collecting money
he was saving a life

Isabelle's Speech Of 2007

My speech by Isabelle
.
Close your eyes and imagine this.
Villages are being destroyed, 1 ½ - 2,000,000 people are being driven out of their homes and at least 180,000 innocent people have been killed. Many of them have been women and children.
Thousands are fleeing to refugee camps only to find themselves hungry and more ill.
Now OPEN your eyes and ask yourself this question.

Does this sound familiar? Does this remind you of what the Jews went through during the 2nd World War. It sure sounds familiar to me.

Good evening. My name is Isabelle. I have just mentioned in part what is happening in Darfur right now.

Right now as we sit here in this wonderful country of Canada.

The people of Darfur are suffering a terrible fate and we are doing NOTHING about it. Sound familiar – This is what Canada and the rest of the world did during the Holocaust – Absolutely Nothing – While over 6 million Jews were being killed.

Just like the Nazis did during the holocaust –
The Junjaweed (who is rebel group in Darfur) are trying to wipe out all the Sudanese people in Darfur. And for what reason? Just because they are not of the same religion and have different beliefs.

We as Jews can’t close our eyes to such a tragedy. It is especially important that we immediately come to the assistance and help the people of Darfur. We must show the world that we not only believe in looking after our own people but also those around the world who require our assistance no matter what religion or race. We know how it feels to be ignored by the world and surely we can’t ignore those people in need.

The Sudanese have no sanitation, no food, no water and are living in terrible conditions.

The Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were forced to live in similar conditions.

They also have nobody at their side because the Junjaweed is supported by the Sudanese government and they are also killing native Africans.

Sure sounds familiar! The Jews of Germany had no one to turn to, as Hitler was the Government.

From what you can see – It appears like history IS repeating itself and the rest of the world is doing nothing about it. Lets NOT let this happen and set an example for the world.

I thank you for listening to my speech and hope you enjoyed it!

Aviva's poem with a change of heart

Pre-judged

He walks by empty handed
He is wearing nothing
but a tattered rag

I get shivers
Just looking at him
He probably has not bathed for days
I smell an odor
as bad as stinky socks
he has nothing

I pass by him
Trying not to stare
I squeeze my mothers hand
It is hard
To not notice him
Sitting there

He seems to follow us
It almost looks like
He's pacing behind us
I squeeze my mothers hand
even harder than the first time

I'm scared
I'm worried
I don't now what to do
He's coming closer and closer

He's reached us
He taps my mother's shoulder
he has a twenty dollar bill
in his hand
he asks if it's hers
she replies yes, thank you

He walks by still empty handed
once again he's wearing nothing
but a tattered rag
I'm not scared
He's still the same the person
But now I see him differently

Dolphins at sea

I lay on the beach,
looking at the sea,
hot sun beating down at me

I peer up from my sunbrella and see a dolphin
"Its Beautiful" I speak, watching him
swim away, but he comes back as fast as a
racecar and jumps blocking the sun from my tearing eyes

The dolphins flesh wobbles from
his stomach s I look away in disgust
Not wanting to look at it again.

But my head whipped itself looking
back, I looked back at the sea
and I dropped my eyes and glared at the dolphins missing fin

I lay on the beach
looking at the sea,
hot sun beating down at me,

I look at the sea,
as calm as it could be,
waiting for me to peer again

Hana's Suitcase

Grade 6 went to the J.C.C. for Hana's suitcase last Tuesday.
Hana's suitcase is about Japanese students who have the suitcase of Hana Brady, a young girl who died in the Holocaust. In an effort to find out more about Hana, they sends letters to many different museums but none of them have any information on Hana Brady. Eventually they find out
Hana's brother, George is still alive, and send him a letter, and get a reply a few weeks later. The students are shocked at how bad the Holocaust was, and they commit themselves to telling Hana's story so others will understand, and to help make sure the horrors of the past are not repeated again . I thought it was a great production.

Zallion's Story

Zallion’s story

“The Saxons are coming, Odin all father protect me now!” said Bjorn the great warrior. “Father, what’s wrong?” questioned Zallion, son of Bjorn. “The Saxons will shed blood and burn our city. You must run to the west to Oslo where the silver moon sets and there a man named Thorak will train you.” replied Bjorn. “But father what will become of you?” said Zallion. “I believe that I shall die in war; I am sorry son.” declared Bjorn. “I will avenge your death father and will come back with an army in ten years and a day and no longer. I shall be twenty one years young I vow to you father that I will not rest until the devil himself takes me away. That is my oath - that is my destiny!” exclaimed Zallion.

“May Thor protect you son.” And with that Bjorn handed him an ax, food and water. “With haste son,” cried Bjorn as he went into battle and was slaughtered gruesomely. “DEVIL TAKE ME WITH SPEED!” Bjorn was dead. The Devil was lingering around the battle ground and the victorious Saxons could feel it. They knew he was watching blood fly out of the Norwegians heads and knew he was watching when their leader Arak took a bite out of Bjorn’s heart and said, “I AM ARAK - NO ONE CAN CHALLENGE ME!”

Meanwhile Zallion was running towards Oslo. He was crying because he knew his father was dead. Zallion traveled for 3 months and finally arrived in Oslo. Once there, he immediately sought out Thorak, who wasn't easy to find. Everyone that he asked about Thorak just went on and on about him and how fearless he is and how he’d fought in many wars. Finally, he came across a shed and went in and said, “Do you know were Thorak is?” The person who replied to him had a rough voice. It was the voice of a man who had escaped death more than once. It was the voice of Thorak.

Zallion’s training was incredibly difficult. His training was hard in different skills like bows and arrows, throwing knives, swords, axes and using his shield. Zallion didn't enjoy his training but Bjorn was always in his mind. Everyday Zallion prayed to Odin just like his father did, “Odin all father protect me now.” He would chant those words every night and morning. Years of training passed Zallion was strong in his mind and body. It was two years until his training was done. Zallion met a man named Rokal he was knowledgeable in the ways of dark magic. Zallion became his apprentice. The ways of dark magic were difficult. It was all done by using runes, but to use a rune your soul must be at a certain level. You must be close to the devil. Zallion did get close to the devil he did it by killing himself.

Zallion went down to hell he watched the devil using his dark magic for the slaughtering of people who deserved to be slaughtered for the second time in their life. The underworld was covered with blood and guts of people killed. It was worse than the battle grounds after a war. The devil was a dark magician. He was a better sorcerer than Rokal his name was Alknaz, he was feared by all. Except Zallion. Zallion connected with the devil so well that he became more powerful than Rokal. Alknaz told Zallion to go back to earth and slay Rokal. Zallion did go up to earth and he executed Rokal by using the rune of death which would exterminate Rokal in the goriest way possible. Zallion soon realized that he also knew how to heal which made him more powerful than Alknaz. Zallion took life a way from the devil himself.

Ten years and a day came and passed. Zallion’s army was very powerful. Zallion decided to conquer Rome. Zallion and his vast army traveled far. In Rome Zallion told Cesar “Hand over your land and you and your people will be spared, if you don’t do as I say your empire will crumble.” “I do not care about you, my armies will destroy you.” said Cesar “very well my army and I shall strike at midnight. The Roman Empire shall fall by the hands of Zallion!” exclaimed Zallion “We will see about that Zallion.” Whispered Cesar. That midnight Zallion conquered Rome. Zallion grabbed Cesar and with Zallion’s nails he ripped out Cesar’s heart and bit it then Zallion said “I AM ZALLION – NO ONE CAN CHALLENGE ME!”

Zallion grew so powerful he didn't realize that his nature was becoming just like Arak. Zallion stopped praying to Thor and Odin. Zallion went to Britannia where the Saxons ruled, he went to conquer their land but not for his father. Zallion was doing it for his ego he wanted everyone to fear him and his armies more than they feared Arak and the Saxons. Zallion didn't know that the Saxons ruled Lugdunensis in Gallia. When Zallion and his legions crossed Lugdunensis to board a boat going to Britannia, he got attacked by the Saxons. Both fought hard, but in the end the only men standing were men of Zallion’s. SEE ARIEH FOR THE REST OF THE STORY

Elegy

Dear Safta Rabba Ruchammah,
I have never really met you,
but some how I feel really close to you
I love you,
even though you're not there

I know you passed away when I was only 3 months old
but I heard some really great things about you
you were nice, smart, giving, and beautiful inside and out

I was your first and only great grand-child
and I was and am proud to have this job
and the thing that I most care about,
is that I caused you this happiness.

jonah and the whale

By Jonah and Noah

Once there was a man named Jonah. He was a messenger for G-d and he didn’t like his job. One day G-d gave an order to Jonah to go to Nineveh and tell the people of Nineveh to stop being bad. Jonah didn’t want to help the people of Nineveh instead he wanted them to get punished. G-d wanted to see if the people of Nineveh would listen to Jonah and if not G-d would destroy all of Nineveh.

So instead of listening to G-d Jonah tried to run away from Nineveh and not do what G-d asked him? He ran to the sea where he found a ship that was going to another city. He paid the captain and hid in the bottom of the ship and went to sleep.

That night a big storm occurred, all the men were scared and started to toss all their belongings overboard and prayed that they wouldn’t drown.

The captain went to find Jonah who was still asleep.
He said to Jonah “how can you sleep? Get up and pray to your G-d maybe he can help us!”

Meanwhile the other sailors decided that it was Jonah’s fault. He must have done something wrong to make his G-d so mad. So they asked Jonah “what have you done to make your G-d so angry?”

“I am running away from something that G-d asked me to do. It is my fault this is happening. If you throw me into the sea the storm will stop.”

The men didn’t want to throw Jonah into the sea so they tried to row the best they could but the storm kept getting worse. So they threw Jonah off the ship. The storm slowly calmed down. The men on the boat realized that Jonah was monotheistic (which means believes in one G-d).

Then the captain and the crew looked out to the sea as a huge fish came and swallowed Jonah. G-d actually sent the fish to keep Jonah from drowning. Jonah stayed in the fish for three day and three nights.

Just think for a second what it would be like to be inside a fish. There are no windows and lots of strange things floating around that you can’t see because it’s so dark. Other than that I’m not sure what it would be like, but Jonah probably didn’t know if he would ever see daylight again.

While Jonah was inside the fish he prayed to g-d all the time. He asked G-d to forgive him for running away and also thanked G-d for not allowing him to drown.

After the third day G-d forgave Jonah and told the fish spit him out on dry land. Jonah was happy to be out of the fish, but boy, he needed a shower.

The G-d told Jonah again to go to Nineveh and tell the people to stop being bad. This time Jonah obeyed G-d and left for Nineveh.

When Jonah got to Nineveh he told the people what had happened to him and told them the order from G-d and in 40 days the city and everything in it would be destroyed. Jonah was surprised that the people of Nineveh listened to him and that they apologized to G-d.

Soon the king of Nineveh heard what was going on and ordered that everyone must listen to G-d and stop doing bad things. When G-d saw that they were trying to be good he felt love for them and did not destroy there city.

As Jonah left the city he was made that G-d did not punish them. He knew that G-d was a loving and that he didn’t want to destroy there land.

So Jonah went on a hill and sat. G-d saw Jonah and knew how he was feeling so he explained to Jonah that he loves everyone. He does not like to destroy people who are doing bad things. G-d would rather see us turn from our bad ways and do well again.

Noah's speech 07

PICTURE THIS: You are a 10 year old child walking into the house after a day of school and smelling a home made Challah fresh out of the oven. See yourself sitting at a dining room table covered with a table cloth and dishes that were passed down 3 generations. Imagine yourself holding a Kiddush cup that belonged to your great grandfather and watching your mother lighting Shabbat candles with candlesticks belonging to your great-great grandmother. See yourself looking at pictures on your dining room wall with faces of 4 generations of your family. Even your parents as children.

Hello parents, children, judges and friends. My name is Noah Bogdonov and this is my second year in the speech contest. I’m in grade 5 at Vancouver Talmud Torah and I’m here to talk about why Shabbat evening is important to me.
You have just experienced a PART of my Shabbat evenings. Now let me tell you MORE about why Shabbat evening is so special to me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been sitting at Friday night dinners like the one I just described, sometimes with friends, sometimes with family. I have been told stories about people I love, people I live far away from and even people that I have never met in my family.

Friday nights are special to me because we sing the Shabbat prayers and THAT makes me feel closer to G-d. It helps to make Friday night just a little bit different than our every day meals and evenings together. It makes me feel safe and happy no matter what my week was like.
For our meals, we eat delicious food that my family makes. Special treats like honey cake. This recipe has been made by my great-great-great grandmother and has been passed down to me. I am getting hungry just thinking about it, so let me continue.
I enjoy the privilege of getting to stay up later than usual. I love having my family come over, especially when I get to play with my baby cousin. We like to tell jokes and stories about our day, talk about the good and bad parts of our week and talk about the ancestors on the wall. We play games at the end of the meal. We even dance, sometimes sing and play our instruments. All of this helps to bring us closer and closer together. Shabbat evening is also special because it creates a lot of memories that I KNOW I will share with my children some day. I think that if ALL children in the world had a night like Shabbat, maybe there would be more happy people around.

You have just heard why I love Shabbat and I’m sure some of you feel the same. I hope that now you understand why I chose to talk about Shabbat evenings and if you STILL don’t get it, maybe my mom will invite you over for a Shabbat dinner with us soon.

Why Sandy Koufax Is My Favorite Jewish Hero

By: Jonah Morris

It was the bottom of the 9th. The Los Angeles Dodgers are leading by one run. They need one more out to win. Sandy Koufax is pitching. Strike one, strike 2 strike 3 and your out!

Good evening honorable judges and friends.

My name is Jonah Morris. I am in grade 5 at Vancouver Talmud Torah. My topic is why Sandy Koufax is my favorite Jewish hero.

The dictionary defines a hero as a person of distinguished courage, someone admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities, a person who performed a heroic act. There are a lot of people in the world who do great things; however, Sandy Koufax was a true hero.

He was an American left handed pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1955 until 1966. In 1963, he was named the most valuable player in the National League. He led both leagues in wins and strikeouts and was the first major league player to pitch more than 3 no hitters! Sandy Koufax was also the youngest player ever elected to the baseball hall of fame. While all this is very impressive, it is not the reason he is my favorite Jewish hero.

Picture this: It is game one of the 1965 World Series and all of Los Angeles, all of California and all of North America is looking forward to the game. The fans, the players, the coaches and the owners are all excited about the first game. But what happens? Something nobody expected--Sandy Koufax refused to pitch game one of the 1965 World Series because game day fell on Yom Kipper. This action had great meaning. He told all 47, 797 fans at the game and the whole world that he was a Jewish ball player and not a ball player who was Jewish.

Sandy Koufax is my favorite Jewish hero because he didn’t hide his Jewishness. He stood up for what was important. Every Jewish person in North America was proud of him.

Sandy Koufax was an example to us all. Our Judaism must come before work, sports or any other thing we do. How many of us would be willing to miss a championship game or something you’ve worked your whole life for?

Sandy Koufax is my Jewish hero because he sacrificed something important for his Jewishness. This act was heroic beyond words!

Thank you,

Jonah Morris

Hector: “Hey Stanley.”

“Hi Hector. How are you?” Stanley Questioned.

“Good. How are you?” Hector replied.

Stanley: “I’m fine.”

“Can I ask a favor from you?” Hector mumbled.

Stanley: “Sure. What do you need?”

Hector: “I really want to learn how to play basketball.”

“What got you into basketball all of a sudden?” Stanley said puzzle

Hector: “I watched the NBA and I saw the players do slam dunks, free throws, and dribbling. It interested me so much that I asked the kids at school if I could play. They laughed and called me Zero. If I showed them how good I am then maybe they will allow me to play.”

Stanley: “Sure.”

“Thank you so much! You will not regret it.” Hector cried.

Stanley: “You’re welcome Hector. It is great that you are starting to make friends.”

Hector: “I know, I am not that shy anymore.”

“So, what time should I come?” Asked Stanley.

Hector:” 5:45. You can also come over for supper.”

Stanley: “That would be great.”

Hector: “See you tomorrow.”

Stanley: “Ya. See you tomorrow.”

I shall be 21 years young and vow to you father that I will not rest until the devil himself takes me away. That is my oath - that is my destiny!” exclaimed Zallion.

“May Thor protect you son.” And with that Bjorn handed him an ax, food and water. “With haste son,” cried Bjorn as a poisoned arrow flew into his head.

Response to 'Ernest Mann'

Naomi Nye starts this poem by saying, “You can’t order a poem like you order a taco.” She’s saying that poetry is not fast food, it’s slow food: we should take time to write or read a poem because a lot more thought and care goes into it.

Another point is that Nye’s poem doesn't read the way most of us imagine a poem reads, with rhyming lines and such. This poem is more like a letter or a story. In fact, it is a type of letter: “Anyone who says, ‘Here’s my address, write me a poem,’ deserves something in reply.”

In this ‘letter’ Nye writes: “Poems hide. In the bottoms of our shoes they are sleeping. They are the shadow drifting across our ceiling the moment before we wake up.” What she’s saying is that poems aren't obvious and that we have to dig deep into ourselves to find their meanings.

She also uses this poem to show us how incredible the world is when we open ourselves up to new ways of looking at things. For example, most of us think that skunks are smelly and gross, but the man she describes (I think it’s the man in her title, Ernest Mann) finds poetry in a skunk’s eyes. Ernest is the opposite to the boy in our last poem, “The Little Boy,” because he is a non-conformist. Nye write of him: “Nothing was ugly just because the world said so.”

My mom always says to me that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Nye says this in a much more poetic and beautiful way. And she reminds us not to prejudge, not only people, but everything in the world.

The Left Eye/ harris burdick

"Was Archie in his bed?" I asked my self.
Ever since my mom and dad died Ive always watched out for my brother just like my mom used to do. " OK Jess calm down Archie is perfectly fine ." I mumbled to myself. But right as I said that I just had to go check on him . I ran to his bedroom as fast as I could. It was so clean that i could actually walk in. But something was different although the pictures weren't crooked or his wooden boat. But just as i looked down I knew the answer, My brother Archie was MISSING!
I was so scared that I didn't bother look for him I just called the police. "Hello this is Jessica Hamilton I live on 1768 Arbutus street, Please come as soon as possible." but just as I finished saying my address they hung up on me. "What am i going to do?" I cried. Then the doorbell rang " DING DONG" I opend the door. I thought that maybe it could be the police but it wasn't. It was a guy and on his face he had warts, pimples and hair growing out of his eyes! Then in a calm voice he said "I'm here to pick up your brothers dead body." " who said he was dead!" " you did maam, you called the undertakers.'' " well your name is Jessica Hamilton and you live on 1768 Arbutus street right?" He said. "Yes Yes it is." I said very sadly. "Well then I must have called the undertakers, but I thought I dialed 911." I said as a shiver went through me. "Well i think i see your brother is he the one?" The man asked. The two of us walked out the door and down the drivethru. And right in front of me was my six year old brother dead with blood all over his left eye. As I watched the man carry my brother into the hearse a tear fell down my cheek as I saw the car dissapear into the darkness of the night. I cried to my self and thought that ill never understand how this horrible thing happend.

Vancouver Writers Festival field trip tomorrow!

Harris Burdick

The 3rd Floor Window

The Beginning 1

“It all began when someone left the window open;” He didn’t know what would happen. This story occurred in a small city in Italy called Sicily. The year was 1976. It was a rather cold day; a man named Mr. Edwin Seng was sitting in his apartment on the third floor in his bedroom with his girlfriend, Ms. Emily Karnun. They were watching a soccer game that Italy was playing in. It was a good game so far but everyone knew who was going to win. Emily was a beautiful and intelligent lady, and Edwin was a nice handsome boyfriend, but her luck in life was about to change.

The Knife 2

Unexpectedly, a knife came flying swiftly through the open window and went right through the core of Emily’s head, blood was gushing out. At that Edwin ran, he realized that he was a hunted man wherever he went. Until he found the killer, he had a target on his head. Before Edwin left his apartment he took the knife with him. He knew that he only had one hope, but he didn't know were to find him. Edwin knew if he couldn't find the famous vigilante who was only known by his nickname that he would be laying next to his dear departed Emily. He needed to find The Silent Scope.

Jack Christopher Mohogony 3

Edwin decided to go to the only person he knew who might know The Silent Scope, Jack Christopher Mohogony. Edwin went to Jack. Jack said he knew Silent Scope’s real name and how to contact him, but Jack wouldn't declare how to contact him or his real name. Edwin left Jack’s place. He knew were to go next.

Raff Hungman 4

Edwin went to visit his friend Raff Hungman just to talk about there old life, and what happened to Emily. When Edwin was thinking of what to say to Raff, he realized he hadn’t cried for Emily yet. Then he realized that it was probably because in his old life most of his family except his brother Mark Jackson was killed, so he learned how to keep his crying in his heart. So there he was at Raff’s apartment. When he got inside he opened a window. Raff and Edwin talked about everything. Suddenly, a knife came flying through Raff’s window. This time it landed in Raff’s skull instead of going right through his skull. It had a note attached to it. It read “I’m watching you, so observe your back”. Right then Edwin realized in both scenarios he opened a window and in both scenarios a knife killed someone he loved. Edwin ran. That’s all he could think of doing-running. Edwin realized that it was pointless to run, so he went home.

The Email 5

At Edwin’s house he received an email from Jack that read, “I have information to tell you about Silent Scope. Come over to my place and I’ll tell you everything, but remember when you’re coming here make sure your not being followed.” Edwin drove over to Jack’s apartment. When Edwin was about to hear a secret about Silent Scope from Jack, the window broke and the pieces of the window came shooting at Jack. That was the end of Jack. Edwin would have to figure out the mystery of Silent Scope and the killer of 1.Emily 2.Raff and newly added to the list 3.Jack. Edwin knew it was too much of a mission for him, but he knew who to go to next.

Mark Jackson 6

Edwin went to his brother Mark Jackson. When Edwin arrived at Mark’s apartment, Mark was scared to let him in. Mark said, “How could you do this to me? You let our whole family die, then you didn’t talk to me for 20 years just because you got mixed up in the Mafia and informed the cops that your STUPID BOSS MR. PACHINO IS A SINNER! NOW YOU COME TO ME-I HATE YOU!!!” Then I said, “I’m sorry I messed up your life, because I got into the Mafia, but that was my old life, now, in my new clean life I need your help. More people are dying because of me, please help me.” Mark spoke, “NOW YOU COME TO ME ASKING FOR HEL” I interrupted and said, “Do you know how to find The Silent Scope?” Mark ended the conversation like this, “NO, TO EVERYTHING” and slammed the door in my face. Mark was steaming. I was about to go, but I heard UUUUU!!! Mark flew out of his third floor apartment window with no arms or legs and written on the side of the apartment building in Marks blood it read, “I know where you live and if you keep going to people I’ll kill them more painfully than any of the deaths so far. So run and hide because wherever you go I’ll be there.”

Nowhere 7

Edwin didn’t know where to go, without getting someone else killed. Edwin wanted to go to the cops, but Edwin was only clean in New York. When Edwin told the cops back in N.Y. about his mafia boss, Mr. Pachino, they put him in the witness protection program. The problem was the program only qualified in the U.S. but here in Sicily, Italy, Edwin was still known as Mr. Bert Jackson, a hit man, who killed over 50 people. In other words Edwin was nowhere. If Edwin wanted to survive he had to go back to his old ways, and murder the killer of his brother, girlfriend and friends. It was time to get his Golden Sniper Rifle out from under his bed, but was it safe to go back to his apartment?

Run 8

Edwin decided to go to his apartment. He went up the stairs to the third floor. When he got in his apartment, he went straight to his bedroom, and got his Golden Sniper from under his bed. Afterwards he heard shooting and a bullet hit his arm. Edwin ran out of the apartment screaming in pain with blood dripping from his arm. Whoever just shot at him pulled the last straw. Edwin was going to take action. Edwin was fuming in anger, and was going to take the next plane to New York.

The Plane 9

Edwin got a ticket on a plane to New York. Edwin was relaxing on the plane watching a movie, when he heard two gun shots, and two people falling to the ground, dead. Edwin couldn’t believe it, the plane was taken by terrorists. The plane was flying smoothly for awhile with Edwin pretending he didn’t know what was happening. Until he could see a glimpse of the Empire State Building. Edwin quickly got up took his Sniper Rifle and a parachute from the escape door and jumped off the plane. Edwin had a long free fall because if he deployed his parachute to early the parachute would get caught in the airplane’s jets. Edwin landed safely and then realized the “terrorists” were actually trying to kill him not the other people on the plane. Edwin decided to go back to Sicily now that he knew he really was being hunted.

Back In Sicily 10

Edwin got back to Sicily easily. Edwin became the predator and the killer became the prey. Still Edwin wanted to find The Silent Scope, because Edwin didn’t want to go back to his old life, but finding The Silent Scope was hopeless. Edwin went everywhere in Sicily where supposedly The Silent Scope lived. Edwin went all over Italy with his Sniper Rifle. Wherever Edwin went the prey hid.

No More Silent Scope 11

Edwin decided he didn’t need The Silent Scope. Edwin wanted to kill the prey himself. After all, the killer murdered his loved ones and shot his arm. The killer probably didn’t kill The Silent Scope’s loved ones or shoot his arm. So it was settled in Edwin’s mind that “The Prey” was his to feast on.

The Prey 12

Edwin found where the prey was hiding. He barged into the hiding place and saw the prey but was surprised who “The Prey” was. It was Mr. Pachino. Mr. Pachino said, “Bert you told the cops about me I had to escape from the electric chair, why? Why did you do it?” Edwin replied “because you killed my WHOLE FAMILY!!! I’M NOT THE PREY ANYMORE!!! SILENT SCOPE!!! AND ANYWAYS WHY DID YOU BECOME A VIGILANTE, I”LL NEVER BECOME CLEAN!!!” And with that, Edwin took out his Golden Sniper Rifle and shot The Silent Scope three times. Blood was gushing out of Mr. Pachino. With Mr. Pachino’s blood, Edwin wrote “THE PREDATOR HAS FEASTED” on the wall

The Myth 13

Some say this story is fake, but next time you’re in Sicily never stay at a apartment on the third floor, because you never know when “The Predator” has a target on you. Who knows “The Predator” might want to feast again….

THE END…

Poetry Response by Tomer

This poem is about two men trying to hike up a mountain. One of the men criticizes the other man for the way he looked, he wonders to himself how a fat like him can get so fat and try to attempt to clime a mountain. when the fat man passes by he sees what is written on his tee-shirt, and feels ashamed of what he thought earlier. The point of this story is not to judge people by the way they look, but by the way they are.

Aviva's thoughts on prejudice...

Imagine, not being able to go to the same restaurant as others, not being able to use the same washroom as others or even getting kicked out of your own home for living in a neighborhood with others who don’t want you. This can all happen from being judged on your color or religion.

You might be thinking that you would never do something like that to someone else. But, people do this all the time. Many people say prejudice things everyday without even realizing what they are doing and the harm they are causing.

What I have learned about in class is that prejudice means pre-judging someone. I feel that this is wrong and can only hurt others. Some examples are like the Jews getting judged just because of there religion or the blacks because of the color of there skin. People are judging people by the way they look.

What happens very often is you will see someone with piercings all over and think that they are very awkward or strange. People pre-judge bigger people and assume negative things instead of looking at what type of person they are inside. This also goes on every day at a normal everyday school all over the world. Kids pre-judge other kids just because of what they wear or the way that they look. Everyone should be treated equally and should not be put down for looking differently. You just have to get to know them before you pre-judge (prejudice) them.

Another thing people do is stereotype. Stereotyping leads to being prejudice. I think that stereotyping is an awful thing and that we should try to prevent it from happening. Some very common ones are “Jews have big noses” or “Chinese people are bad drivers”. There is no point of saying any of these comments because they make the world a bad place to live in, full of negative thoughts which don’t help but only hurt others.

These stereotypes and prejudiced sayings, lead to consequences that people do not deserve. The Jews in the holocaust suffered consequences for no reason. In class we watched the movie Daniel’s Story. After watching that it really made me think about how over 600,000 innocent Jewish people like us died for nothing. Or how black people could not sit on the same benches as whites or even drink from certain water fountains. Once a again the Blacks and the Jews got the consequences when they did not deserve them.

All of these terrible things have been going on for a very long time. There has been nobody successful in putting a stop to it. I wish that all of this could come to an end, and the whole world could learn from their lessons. Even though this seems impossible I still hope that it can happen one day.

Hook and Outline due on Wednesday

the lining of heaven and hell

Dawn. A sliver of the moon is still shining. The sun is rising. A hairline of hell’s gate is still open. A red day. Blood has been spilt by the devil himself. Hell’s gate finally closes. The blue sky is slowly reappearing. All is quiet. The trees are being blown, leaves flying in the air. Autumn, 1431, October 22nd, the day no one can forget, the day Sarx was born. I’m from Elizix and have moved to Hitrae, the nicest city in Exrek or the universe. My name is Exen. I am a warrior of my own kind, protecting the human race. We fight all: apes, tigers, demons, the undead, and most of all we are at constant war with the minions of Sarx and Zerk, the greatest demons that are known to the universe. Yet we are trying now to kill Zerk and Sarx, but we cannot locate them though we did find Zerk’s lair. The demons are too strong and we had to flee the Onyx Sanctuary. I am now living my life in Sondo, a once happy city, but not since Zerk’s minions have come here. We cannot be very happy any more and I don’t think we’ll ever see happiness in Sondo again, not until the human race kills Zerk and Sarx. And we are never in harmony with the tigers or apes anymore. Yet that may be the only way we can ever defeat Zerk and Sarx. “I hope that Sarx will die soon brother” said Kniscare. “Me too, Kniscare,” said I.

Emma's brave adventures in tonsilectomy!!

My Adventures in Tonsillectomy
By Emma Kallner

Definition: A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure in which the tonsils are removed. Sometimes the adenoids are removed at the same time.

October 9, 2007 was one of the worst days of my life! It was the day I had a tonsillectomy. A tonsillectomy is when a surgeon takes your tonsils out. I was having my tonsils and adenoids out. Now I will tell you what a tonsillectomy was like for me.
The night before the surgery you eat your dinner and you go to sleep and by midnight you are not aloud to eat. So I woke up in the middle of the night and was really worried. It was so hard to get back to sleep. I woke up the next morning really nervous with butterflies in my stomach. The thing that was worrying me was the needle that they were going to stick into me to make me fall asleep. I was afraid that it was going to really hurt. I was also concerned that I would not go to sleep even with the needle. I eventually fell back asleep for a few hours.
In the morning I could only drink water until 9:30. I couldn't have any breakfast. We left home at 10:30 and quickly stopped in at school to get homework and to say good bye. It was nice to see some friends before I went to the hospital. It calmed me down for a little while anyway.
When we got to Children’s Hospital, we had to check in at the Surgical Day Care. There was actually a line up of other kids getting surgeries done. I looked at all the other kids and they did not look worried at all. I wanted to turn around and get out of there. When we got to the front of the line the nurse that was checking me in said, “Your surgery is at 12:30 and you can go sit over there on those benches till they call you”. I listened to my i pod while we waited to calm my nerves. Then the nurse opened the door and called my name to come in. I thought my heart was going to pop out as I was so scared.`
She brought me and my parents to a curtained off room. She asked me to get in to a hospital gown. After I changed, the woman came in and put a cream on my hand that makes it numb so I can’t feel the needle. The hospital calls it “magic cream”. Maybe they could have used all of that magic on something else maybe like on getting me out of there! I sat in that room for about 10 minutes and then the nurse brought me out to where all of the other kids wait for their surgery. It was packed!! Unfortunately, the only seat left was right next to the door where all the kids come out from surgery. This was not the greatest seat to sit in because when you watch all the kids come out from surgery it makes you want to cry not only because it makes you more worried but also because you feel bad for them. Imagine a little girl being rolled out on a bed after her surgery. She was crying and moaning and her face had lots of purple spots on it. My Mom told me that she had some laser surgery done on her face to get rid of marks. That is what I had to see over and over.
I had been waiting 2 ½ hours and no one had called my name. My surgery was an hour late so far. I was getting really hungry and more and more nervous. My Dad went to go ask how much longer it would be. The nurse said that the surgeon was running behind and there were two more people ahead of me. Yikes!!! That is the moment I thought I would just walk out of there and not do the operation. I got so mad at my parents for making me do this. It was going to be another 2 hours before my surgery and I didn’t think I would make it. The nurse gave me a bed to lay down in and I watched Seinfeld to get my mind off my nerves, headache and hunger. I started to get dizzy and a little nauseous from not eating. I thought to myself that this must be what it feels like on Yom Kippur. Finally at 3:15 when I was the last patient in a once busy waiting room, a nurse came to bring me into surgery. This made me cry. When I got into the surgery room I saw all of these silver bowls and tools. My Dad came in with me all dressed up in a blue cap, slippers and a yellow gown. That made me laugh a little.
My Dad held my hand as they put the gas mask over my face. I tried really hard not to fall asleep but the gas was too strong . I guess that is when they put the I.V. in my hand and started the operation. I was in surgery for half an hour and then they brought me out to recovery. My parents said I was really funny when I woke up. I asked for Popsicle's right away and had three by the time I got up to my room for the night.
I had to share a room with another girl that also got her tonsils out. I wasn’t too excited about this but that is all they could do. My Grandparents came to visit me and brought me balloons. I really appreciated that. I watched T.V with my brother for a while and then my Dad and Jeremy went home. It was just my Mom and I for the night. The nurses kept coming in to check my vital signs, give me Tylenol and ask how my throat was. It actually felt O.K. I couldn’t fall asleep though. There were lots of beeps and moans and noises coming from other patients. The IV machine kept beeping through the night. It was really annoying. I probably slept about 2 hours the whole night. My Mom tried to sleep in the chair beside me. She kept telling me to sleep but I couldn’t so I watched movies and my Mom got me more Popsicle's. In the morning the surgeon came to see me and said my tonsils and adenoids were very big. It was a good thing that I got them taken out. He told me about what to expect as I healed and said I could go home. Yeah!!
The days following were really hard. My throat hurt so much. I could barely swallow. I could only eat about three spoons of a Slurpee. Can you imagine turning down a Slurpee, milkshake and frappacino? I have started eating some soup and cannot wait to eat a big bowl of chips when I am better. It takes two weeks to feel better and three weeks to be completely healed. One more week to feel better. I can’t wait!
This has been my adventure with a tonsillectomy. Stay tuned as the adventure continues. The disgusting scabs are due to fall off any day now. I understand this can be the beginning of another adventure.

Stereotype Response By Jonah

Stereotype

What we have been learning in Tikkun Olam, made me a better person. When I used to look at somebody with tattoos, piercing etc. I would assume that they are bad. But now I learned that looks don’t matter it’s their personality. This lesson made me think of when I used to make mean jokes about other cultures. It seemed funny when it was not about Jews but when it was, then it was hurtful. This lesson affected my life a lot and made me look back at everything that I have done. Like, when I see Arabs I get a weird feeling. I guess what I am trying to say is that there are many stereotypes in the world. No matter how much we want it to stop, we can’t. We can’t change other people’s feelings but you can start by changing your own.

Another Jonah's Poetry Response

Ernest Mann

The first sentence in the poem is “You can’t order a poem like you order a taco”. To me this means that you can’t just order a poem, it has to come to you. You have to open your eyes and see the beauty in everyday things like “the odd sock in your drawer”. Naomi Shihab Nye, the poet was trying to tell the reader to let the poetry in to you life.

I like the title because giving two skunks for a Valentine like Ernest Mann is not your usual Valentines gift. Just because everybody thinks skunks are ugly does not mean they really are. By giving them as a Valentines gift he showed the world how beautiful skunks can be and the poetry in their beauty.

I think poetry can’t be forced. It is something creative and imaginative that finds us when we don’t except it. My favorite part is the ending because the poet is telling us that maybe if we look at something like a pencil, we can discover the hidden beauty inside of it. Overall I learned that we need to be open minded and get to know the people we don’t know very well. We may find out something new about them.

the boy as short as a midget
came running home so fast that he almost slipped
his stomach groled as loud as a tiger growling
he was as hungry like no one fed him for days

he looked at the fridge like he was going to eat it
he ran towards it like it was a marathon
first slow as a turtle
then as fast as a cheetah

the floor was as slippery as cold ice
when he fell he could see the reflection of his bruses
his face his the ground as hard as a rock

Prejudice

Being prejudice is horrible, because prejudice can lead to war and killing, we don’t need another Holocaust on are hands. Over twenty million people died between 1938-1946. There has been a whole lot of prejudice and racism going on in South Africa, from 1948 when the nationalist party got voted in and apartheid came about.

Apartheid ties in with prejudice because the whites were prejudice against the blacks. This meant that at the time the blacks didn’t get much money spent on their education. They had to go to different schools, washrooms, water fountains, public transportation, stores and restaurants because people were prejudice and racist. This lead to the establishment of the African National Congress (A.N.C.), an illegal black party, who were freedom fighters fighting to end apartheid and among them there leader Nelson Mandela. The A.N.C. also had some white supporters.

Apartheid ended when at least 85% of registered voters came to vote. About 68% of them said yes to talks that aimed at creating a new political structure where the black majority would participate in choosing South Africa’s government.

F.W. de Klerk released Nelson Mandela in 1990, and the first democratic vote took place in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was voted into office.

Since then prejudice has taken a turn around against the whites. This because there is now affirmative action, which means a certain percentage of workers have to be black. So the least likely person to get a job in South Africa is a white woman. Also, a white man around 30 years old who is a qualified accountant would have a harder time getting a job than a black man in the same position. Even if the white man had more experience and more qualifications, the black man would get the job first.

I feel the world would be a much better place if no one were prejudice to one another. In Nelson Mandela’s words “Never, never and never again shall this beautiful land feel the oppression to one by another”.

Powerful thoughts from Marc L.

What is Prejudice?

Prejudice here, discrimination there. From leaving out the "geek" in your game, to the Holocaust. Both are the same idea, just on different levels. It starts out with a kid telling a racist joke which slowly can lead to fighting, war and or genocide. The consequences of prejudice are that there could be hatred of the group, person or race who pre-judges. Everyone has in some way or another been prejudiced against, and has prejudged others.

In my life I hear prejudice all the time, whether it be on television or on the playground at school. I care for all kinds of people, races and religions. If anyone I know pre-judges someone else, I would do anything possible to stop the bad vibes. Prejudice can cause conflict around me which upsets me. There’s often an unnaturally cold feeling in the air when bad things are said.

So before you go and judge someone else, think what the consequences could be. How would you feel being pre-judged by someone you don’t even know?

Persona Poem by Jonah

The End

the end is near

the end is now

that is the only thing in my mind

as a water bottle being recycled

is no choice

I will be made into anything

I will never see my family again

I could see the recycling box

there were many other desperate water bottle

screaming for help

there is nothing I can do

suddenly the humans grip opened

my life was falling

the end is near

the end is now

Digestive Poem From Grade 5

The Digestive System Poem

By: Jonah

Digestion is a process that begins when you eat

Food is the fuel; it’s the bodies’ treat.

Your teeth chew and chew and chew

Because that’s what they do.

Along comes the spit

To break it down a bit.

A muscle called the esophagus squeezes the food down

Into the stomach where it will be found

The food is turned into liquid

Destroying the bacteria, this is so wicked.

The small intestine keeps what we can use,

Separating it from refuse.

Next, the large intestine

Where waste becomes a solid.

Absorbed is the h20

Kerplop! Here we go…

Here are a few Friendship quotes I thought might be interesting

Friendship doubles your joys, and divides your sorrows.

hard to find but lucky to have.
