Plagiarism Summary

Plagiarism is stealing another person’s ideas. Plagiarism is not a good behaviour because consequences may be severe and troublesome. The consequences may vary by which school you go to. There are also different ways to plagiarize. For example, buying papers off the internet or even using your own written paper twice! Plagiarism may seem hard to avoid but there are ways to prevent you from plagiarizing.

There are in fact many ways to avoid plagiarism. To prevent the risk of plagiarism, you must give credit to the source when you use someone else’s ideas, opinion or theory. You must also give credit to any information that is not common knowledge or you can paraphrase the ideas. Another strategy for avoiding plagiarism is to quotation marks on the information from the text and write “according to ____ “. Paraphrasing is also an option, but when you are finished, you should check the paraphrase to the text for large similarities.

Paraphrasing is a very helpful skill to learn. Paraphrasing is when you use someone else’s ideas or information, except that you must put the information in your own words. Paraphrasing is helpful because it is not plagiarism and it still successfully expresses the information needed.
