Facts On Cat
Hey guys,
heres a meteaphor I found in the poem Cat.
"Kin lean and slim"
I think that the poet is trying to say that the cat (or cat's) is very poor and is starving.
I also found out that there was less than 7 words in every line.
Some alliteration was: "Where woods"(line 21), "Deep in den"(line 10)
I think that the poet was showing where cats come from and that not all cats are nice and cute.

Poetic Devices in "Cat"
Hi guys i found a metaphor in "Cat",
When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote "leaps on his meat" is a perfect metaphor. of course a cat can not leap on his meat, it describes that the cat is so eager for his meats that he jumps to get it.
This is also a great sensory image describing a cat gobbling up meat.
Sensory Images:
-Claw in paw
-Fat cat on the mat
-leaps on his meat

4th and final draft of horse poem
hi guys,
I had another idea...the story of spirit is way to long and it would take me for ever to write it in a poem. So instead I'm just going to leave it at the beginning of the movie and maybe you can imagine what happens next-let your mind explode with idea's!
Nini
Galloping through the tall green grass.
Letting the wind go through my tail,
And rustle between the hairs of my
Playing games in the dry canyon walls,
to finding new places and adventures
through out my area.
I was the leader of the heard.
And with that job came responsibility.
A lot of it.
At some points I got really curious.
And at some points, too curious,
That's how I endangered the whole heard
and especially, my pride.
One night, I saw a little light...
apparently it was a fire.
And that's how my whole
adventure started.
Once seeing the fire, a wiser horse would've
ran away. But I wanted to know
who these strange creatures were
and what they were doing here.
Apparently I woke them up and
they wanted to catch me.
But why would I let them do that?

fixed bad paragraph
Wahoo my twelfth birthday. I’m really exhausted from the great time my friends and I had, we had pizza and root beer. I got a little over handed when I ate Ross' pizza he was steaming. I had to give him my pop, it sucked. The only thing is I shook my pop and it burst in his face, but he totally deserved it. Maybe tomorrow I will tell you what happen when I opened my present’s thanks a lot for listening to me dear dairy.

New and Improved Bad Paragraph by Shakaed
Yesterday it was my birthday! I turned twelve! I cannot believe how old I am! It was the best birthday EVER! Yesterday Sarah, Josh, and Lauren came over and we ate pizza AND ice cream AND cupcakes. Lauren was 1 and a ½ hrs late! We were so hungry that we couldn’t wait for her anymore so we started stuffing pizza in our mouth. I was eating my 2nd piece already when Lauren finally came.
“It’s about time, Lauren,” I said in between bites of pizza.
“Sorry,” Lauren replied, out of breath. “Ryan made us stay 20 minutes late to do push-ups. And then I had to go home to shower, and change, and then ask mom to drive me. Plus, there was a big traffic jam on No. 3 road.” Lauren continued. She looked inside the ‘Dominoes Pizza’ box and figured it was empty. “Where is my PPPPPIIIIZZZZZAAAAA?!”
“Well, I gave it to Josh because I thought you weren’t going to come.” I said.
“Whoops...” Josh said in the middle of chewing pizza bites in his mouth. We could barely understand him.
I had to give Lauren my ice cream because I gave her pizza away and there wasn’t any left. But because she was so furious she ate her ice cream so fast and got a Major Brain Freeze. I felt a little bad for Lauren but I guess she deserved it. I’d tell you about present time... but... I don’t want to make you jealous. Well, maybe I’ll tell you about Lauren’s. When I looked inside there was a tiny little teddy bear. Which I already have. Like she didn’t know that already. She probably took it out after Josh ate her pizza. Come to think of it, she did say she did go to the washroom for about 20 minutes at 3:00, right before present time....

samses' LiKe toTaly notbad paragraf (JUST JOKING)
Yesterday was my twelfth birthday, it was absolutely superb. Almost everyone was there and my wife Felicity was looking beautiful. Even my friend John Matthews came. I was very happy because having just published his ninth best seller; John doesn’t have a lot of time for parties. My wife even cracked open a fantastic 1986 bottle of merlot. The gourmet chef made a mouth watering fish and mushroom fillet, and the garlic tapinad was to die for. Unfortunately, my boss ate the mushroom, garlic and tomato pasta, with rose sauce and a hint of Indian spices that had been specially made for my friend Harrington. Well, when Harrington got to my party I had an awkward conversation with him and told him that my boss had accidentally eaten both his Harrington’s prepared meals. Harrington was quite disappointed. I felt badly for him so I gave him some of mine. Unfortunately, what I didn’t know was that Harrington was extremely allergic to Indian spices. So, after he ate some of the dish he went into anaphylactic shock and was rushed to hospital. Thankfully, his medical insurance covered all the bills. My gifts were great; Thomas gave me a wonderful book on the aboriginal people of Canada, and Susan gave me a donation in my name to a charity of my choice. Great wine, great people, great food, what more could a man ask for. Too bad I have to wait another four years until I turn thirteen.

Fixed Bad Paragraph
Yesterday was the best day ever because it was my 12th birthday! All my friends came over and we had a blast! The food was excellent because my mom made everything at home. My friend Sabine was kind of late so I ate her pizza because it was my favorite kind, cheese without tomato sauce. Once Sabine found out she got very angry with me so I told her I’d give her my chocolate chunk ice cream. Sabine ate the ice cream to fast and got a major brain freeze that turned into a headache. She had to go home early and I felt guilty because it was my fault. I apologized at dance and now everything is normal.
If I told you about present time you would regret it for the rest of your life. It was so hectic!

Party Time!
Yesterday was the worst day ever! I went to my friend John’s birthday party at his house and I was a little late because I had to finish my hockey game which went into overtime and then a shoot out. When I finally got to the party my so-called friend John ate my food which really made me mad because I had no time to eat after my game so I was starved. And then when John did give me something to eat, all he gave me a shaken soda and some stale gummy bears. I got coke all over my face and it took forever to swallow the gummies. I decided it was my turn to give John a little surprise, just wait till you hear about his present!!!

My Idea
Hey guys,
I had an idea that in a way attaches to Jonah's idea. I was thinking that maybe the whole grade could do a poem to show that we are all one, and everyone gives one stanza about them, their year so far or something like that. So if everyone approves, you can start leaving your stanzas in the comment box.
Thank you so much!
-Nini
P.S. if anyone wants to help put them in order. that would be good too.

Marc's Birthday Party
If I had to write a list summing up the best days of my life, this day would be number one! My twelfth birthday party! Tom, Bob, Bobby, Tommy, Timmy, Hank, and Bill all came over to my mansion with 10 floors, an elevator and a swimming pool. We munched on some fantastic chips, popcorn, and gummy bears in the backyard next to the pool. My friend Timmy was one and a half late so I munched on his food for him. Timmy was furious when he finally arrived at the party because I ate his chips, so I had to (my Mom forced me) give him some of my gummy bears to make him feel slightly better. Later I got some amazing revenge because Timmy ate his gummy bears like the speed of light because of this the gummy bears stuck to his mouth and he couldn't talk for the rest of the party. I felt a horrible for Ross' mouth (I still think he deserved it). Next time I'll tell you about what happen when we all opened my presents.
A segment from “The Presents”:
It jumped out from the box and bit Timmy on the nose...

Sort Of Super Totally Wicked Fixed Paragraph
Last Monday I had my twelfth birth day party. It was entertaining! All of my friend's came over and we ate some outstanding food in my backyard. My friend Ross came late to the party and I ended up eating his food. Ross was acting crazy when he got to the party and found out that I ate his pizza. To stop Ross from getting crazier I gave him my ice cream to make up for it. Since Ross was famished he ate his ice cream so fast that he got a major brain freeze. I felt a bad for Ross since he had a headache. Next time I’ll tell you about what happened when we opened my presents and Ross saw what my parents gave me. (After that he regretted coming to come to my party.)

Fixed Paragraph
Yesterday I had the most magnificent 12th birthday ever. All of my friends came over and we ate the most incredible pizza I've ever had. My friend Ross was extremely late so as a punishment I ate his food. It turns out that when Ross finally came he didn't eat any breakfast so he was starving. He was very upset so reluctantly I gave him some of my ice cream. Shortly after, Ross was struck by karma for coming late and he got a painful brain freeze for gobbling down his ice cream. Something in my stomach made me feel bad for Ross but I think he still deserved it. More surprises happened during opening presents but those details I will keep private for personal reasons.

Matt's Fixed Bad Paragraph
I had an awesome birthday party yesterday, I turned 14. It was the best birthday I have ever had! All my friends and cousins came. At the beach we ate this gourmet food that my mom got. My cousin Jacob was really late so I thought it would be funny to eat his food. Jacob was furious at me because I ate his favorite ribs so; I gave him a bit of mine. I was totally mad that I had to give some of mine. When we got home from the beach, I got my revenge on him. He ate the cake so fast he puked all over my mom’s new carpet. I felt a bit sorry but, I knew inside he deserved it. Next time all fill you in on the sleep over that night……

Fixed Bad Paragraph
Approximately 24 hours 12 minutes and 51 seconds ago I had my 12th birthday, it rocks being 144 months old A.K.A. 4380 days old A.K.A. 624 weeks old A.K.A. 105120 hours old. I and my friends from the Superior Math Class and the Accelerating Math Club had a blast. My Mom and Dad hired this guy to explain how E=MC2, we were all amazed at how easy the equation was than we had Math cookies they were all shaped like plus signs. My buddy Alberto was late so I ate his share of math cookies, he was so sad that he missed the lesson on E=MC2 so we taught it to him for fun. Alberto got revenge on me for eating his math cookies he did the algebra questions 4.567 nanoseconds before me it was terrible. Luckily at the end I came out to be the champion Alberto rushed so much that he only got 14997 out of 15000 in 3 minutes 57 seconds 3 milliseconds and 0 nanoseconds while I got 15000 out of 15000 in 3 minutes 57 seconds 3 milliseconds and 4.567 nanoseconds it made me feel like a king (I thought I’d get question number 9361 wrong it was y =3.564 x 61 = 19t.588 + 19 x y.123456789903 = n). I felt kind of bad for Alberto his downfall hit him pretty hard. Well maybe next time I’ll tell you about the Extra Dextra Super Duper Pooper Scooper Mega Extreme Ultra Zoom In Microscope my friends got it for me it zooms in up to 9999999999999999999999x bigger than actual size it’s just amazing.

New And Improved "Bad Paragrph"
Dear Grandpa and Grandma
Yesterday I was so excited for my twelfth birthday; I could hardly sleep the night before. It was so wonderful to have my friends, around me on my birthday, it really made it special. We opened presents and ate delicious cake at the back of the house. My friend Ross was delayed at soccer practice so I gobbled his food up, MMM! When Ross arrived he was furious that I had his scrumptious piece of pizza, so I gave him my ice cream so he wouldn’t be sour for the rest of the party. He scooped the ice cream to fast into his mouth he got a major brain freeze. I felt sorry for Ross, so I made him a nice cup of hot chocolate. Guess what he burned his tongue, but I guess that story is for another time.
Lots of love,

Isabelle's Fixed Bad Paragraph
Yesterday I finally turned 12 years old. It was one fabulous day. Julia, Sarah, Ross and I all hung out. As the pizza melted in our mouth under the blistering sun, Ross arrived. He was an hour and a half late. As he opened the box for pizza he realized that it was empty. With one frustrated faced he turned and asked,
“ Where’s the pizza?”
“ Well I thought you weren’t coming so I let Julia eat it.”
I could see that Ross was a bit mad but it was his fault for coming late. Next course was the cookies n’ cream ice cream. Ross was starving and finished first! He got this huge brain freeze; he looked like his face was about to explode with crisp ice. I felt sorry but there was nothing I could do about it. You don’t even want to hear about the present I got, they were wicked.

Danny's fixed "Bad" Paragraph
Yesterday it was my twelfth birthday and I had this crazy party. We all pigged out on pizza and pop, and then Max took a huge cannon ball into my pool, but he was so full that he puked on everything! My mom had to clean it all up! Since Ross wasn't there yet, I ate both of his pieces of pizza. When he arrived we were already on to the cake and ice cream, and he was pissed 'cause he didn't get to eat his pizza. I felt bad about it, so I then stole Adam's ice cream and gave it to Ross. He ate it so fast though that he got a huge headache and he had to be driven to the hospital in an ambulance. I don't know what was worse, my party, or the fact that we would have to tell Ross' mom what happened.

Aviva fixes the Bad Paragraph
Yesterday I turned twelve years old! I was so happy to be only one year away from becoming a teenager! I invited all of my friends over and we ate pizza inside my tree house until my friend Justine screamed “spider!”. From all the screaming and yelling everything turned into a big mess! We had to move the whole party inside!
The clock was ticking and my friend Ross was already an hour late, I decided that I would eat his slice of pizza. When Ross arrived we were already eating cake.
“Oh…uh….hi Ross,” I said nervously.
“Hello, where's my food?” he said with anger looking at his empty plate.
“Uh…um I thought you weren’t coming so I ate it for you,” I exclaimed.
“Well because of you I have to starve!”
“Um…………sorry Ross I will go ask my mom to order you another pizza,”
“You'd better!” He yelled after me
I won't even start telling you about present time!

POETRY RESPONSE
Hey everybody I wanted to put my response on the web, so here it is...
I thought that The Hangman really showed how you can (and should) stop being a bystander and start being a helper by standing up for the greater good. The line "I did no more than you let me do" is one of the sentences that demonstrates the way Maurice Ogden talks about this. After all, in the Torah it says: not saving a man's life if you can, is a sin.
Also (as a bonus of course) people will help you if you're in trouble and you've previously helped them.
I can relate to this poem because it relates to the Jews and the Holocaust and how nobody helped them when they needed help. And I am a Jew so I can relate to the Holocaust and the poem.
The sensory images help visualize the poem and its meaning with phrases like "smelling of gold and blood and fame" and His eyes of buckshot lead".

Hangman Response from Vanessa
Something very unique about "The Hangman" (by Maurice Ogden), is in the last stanza, when the speaker dies. That specifically caught my eye, because in most poems the speaker lives "happily ever after".
The words "He laid his hand upon my hand," lets you make assumptions of what is going to happen next. You soon find out that, the speaker will be hanged beneath the scaffold. I thought it was interesting to have someone explain their own death. I liked how Maurice Ogden let the speaker get hanged in the end because it was VERY unexpected.

Hangman Response
Hangman Response
Hangman was sometimes hard to follow because there was so much going on, you had to read it a few times to understand what the poem was about, but after three times of reading it I knew what the poem was about. Hangman reminded me of World War II because hangman came into a new city and hung a man. Then he hung a Jew a black person the town people didn’t care they thought it was a joke. People thought Hitler was a joke and he isn’t going to do anything but in the end he killed lots of Jewish people. The town people were bystanders because they didn’t say anything to the hangman about him killing people. The most powerful line in the poem to me was “ I did no more than you let me do”.
I saw many sensory images here are some of them “Smelling of gold and blood flame” “We passed those eyes of buckshot lead.” “Then a twinkle grew in his buckshot eye”. The author put the poem into chapter. There were 4 chapters. The poem was also a rhyming poem.

Sari's Response on Hangman
I thought Hangman by Maurice Ogden was a really good poem. This poem reminded me of World War II because, in World War II Hitler killed people who weren’t like him and no one stopped him. In this poem the hangman killed people who weren’t like him and no one tried to stop him. I thought it had an interesting twist because in the end the narrator dies.

Sam's thoughts on The Hangman by Maurice Ogden
This is one of the strongest poems I have read this year. The first thing that came to my mind after reading The Hangman was World War Two. Hitler started with the Jews, and people around the Jews didn’t say stop. They didn’t care because they weren’t being harmed. Then Hitler ordered more and more people to be killed and no one said anything, just like in the poem. A very powerful line in the poem is when the hangman says, “First the alien, then the Jew…I did no more than you let me do.” This poem teaches you that you can’t sit quietly and ignore problems because they don’t directly affect you. For example, right now there are children starving and being used as slaves in other parts of the world. We have to help even though the problem doesn’t effect us.
The poem’s cadence and rhymes make it sound lovely and gentle. I wonder if Maurice Ogden chose that format to show you that you have to go a little deeper and think about what’s going on and not just be happy if nothing is bothering you. For example, should I be happy if my life is lovely and gentle, but other kids are suffering?

hangman poem
I can connect to this poem because when I was in Barkerville I went to an old courthouse. this courthouse was famous because the presiding judge was known as the hanging. Judge. this judge was feared by the towns people just like the hangman in the poem. if I had been a towns person there knowing I was innocent of any crime I still would have feared the hangman and the hanging judge.

Matts Thoughts On The Hangman
This poem was a one that took time and effort. Maurice Ogden showed how much effort and work he put into it.
This poem was just amazing in so many different ways. It would take me days to name all of them. The thing that I liked about this poem is that you can go many ways with it. Some people don’t like it some people enjoyed it. The point is that Ogden didn’t just lead you one-way with this. You could think any way you want about this poem.
The thing that I found interesting is that after reading a poem many time there is still more to discover. The poem was really good at that. The more times I read this poem more ideas and thoughts pop into my head.

Hangman Respose
Hangman is about a man who comes into a new place. He is like Hitler because at the beginning every body was laughing at him. Later he came into power and picked on this town like Hitler did on the jews. After a couple of days the hangman kept on killing people. Every body was scared so no one would stand up. At the end of the poem there was one man left a jew. The hangman then tricked the jew into coming out and then killing him just like Hitler tricked the jews to go into the gas chambers.
I think that this poem is about holocaust because every thing the hangman did to this town was almost like what Hitler did to the world.

3rd draft of horse poem
Hey guys, Heres draft 3, hope you like it.:) *And also, I decided to kind of make it like the movie "Spirit"- of how Canada and the U.S. had to get rid of all the animals to make our homes... Kind of emphasizing part of the horse's life.
Galloping through the tall green grass.
Letting the wind go through my tail,
And rustle between the hairs of my
Playing games in the dry canyon walls,
to finding new places and adventures
through out my area.
I was the leader of the heard.
And with that job came responsibility.
A lot of it.
At some points I got really curious.
And at some points, too curious,
That's how I endangered the whole heard
and especially, my pride.

Hangman response by Isabelle
This poem was not exactly a poem that I would choose to read. Except the point of this poem was not just to like it, but it was to find the moral. I thought the moral of this poem was not to let something happen until it gets bad but to take a stand before it turns into something unstoppable. It was much like what happened in the holocaust. When Hitler first came to Europe nobody thought he had the power to do any damage. At the time when Hitler was stoppable nobody had the courage to take a stand. By the time people were ready to say something they weren’t strong enough anymore to make an impact. In Hangman almost the same thing happened. I think Maurice Ogden purposely made this poem much like the Holocaust.
One of the sensory images that was very clear was, “ Then a twinkle grew in the buckshot eye,” I pictured a man with a black coat on and black holes in his eyes looking around as he looks for someone to hang. A simile that I found was, “With his buckshot eye and his jaw like a pike.” Since pike means a fish with a long snout and big teeth i think pike would be the perfect description for the way the hangmans jaw looked. This was not only a good simile but it was also a good sensory image.

Hangman Response
The poem “The Hangman” was not my favorite poem. Even though it was filled with metaphors, similes and sensory images the topic of this poem is not really something I would want to read if I had the choice. But then I realized the moral of the poem was what really mattered.
I thought this poem was a great example of how people quickly become powerful and that we have to act before it gets any bigger. Kind of like Hitler, the Jews thought that he was not going to do any harm at first but soon enough he killed six million people. Just like the hangman in the poem, the people were told he was hanging people to test something out bout soon enough he had hanged half the city.
The whole idea of this poem was just amazing. It really makes me think more about my past and how those six million Jews died. It really shows how lucky we are to be living like we do. Maurice Ogden shows that by not caring about what is happening sometimes leads to big consequences.

THE HANGMAN RESPONSE
The poem 'Hangman' was a great poem by M. Ogden. It reminds me of WWII, when it started it out small then to 6 000 000 Jews.
How he the speaker like most people in the holocaust did nothing to stop Hitler. As the hangman said to the speaker," I did no more than you let me do.'' Which the bystanders of WWII did the same. In the end, the speaker got what he let the hangman do to the other villagers. This was a rhyming poem. This was the best poem I have ever read, I give it a 5/5.

hangman response
This poem is such an amazing poem - its one of my favorites. It tells the story of the holocaust. My favorite stanza is:
"into our town the hang man came
smelling of gold blood and flame
and he paced our bricks with a diffident air
and built his frame on the courthouse square"
It makes me imagine a scary monster - the Hangman. He has come to town to hang people and take their money. When the poem says "smelling of gold and flame" it makes me feel that this killer has burnt down peoples homes and taken their money. when the poet uses the word smell he brings up really powerful sensory images.
The hangman is also very much like the frame. As the frame grows on peoples blood, so the hangman grows from peoples money and death.

Hangman History
The Hangman poem, by Maurice Ogden, reminded me of when I was at Acco Prison in Israel. The prison was used to hang the ‘Irgun’ freedom fighters during the war of Independence. I saw the gallows where Jews were killed as prisoners of war. The room was dark, cold and made of cement. In the center there was a noose and a trap door. Even though I was only in grade three I remember exactly what it looked like. When I was reading this poem I imagined the prison again.

Even though this wasnt my faveorite poem there were lots of diffrent ways that I like it. I thought this poem was very well written and very detailed about how the hangman looks like his buckshot eyes.I can connect to this poem becouse it remindes me of the holocost and as being jewish the holocost is a big thing for me and lots of other people.

Hangman Response
I thought that this poem was a metaphor for how people don’t stand up for each other. Each time there was another candidate to be hung the hangman got more and control over the people. The reason he got control over the people was because the villagers were getting weaker and more fearful. I think that when Maurice Ogden wrote: “I did no more than you let me do”. He was trying to tell that person that if the villagers had stood up then the hangman might have stopped killing. The hangman gained power as the villagers lost confidence. I think that Maurice Ogden was trying to show how one person with a lot of power can make people fear for their lives and then they can’t care for others.

Hangman Response
wow I thought this poem was amazing, Maurice Ogden did an excellent job oF making it sound so real. When i first read it I thought I was actually one of the characters in the poem. Also when the author Ogden used the words the gallows tree I immediately got a sensory image of the a man being hung by a string attached to a high post. Oh at the end of the poem stanzas 4, and in 8 stanza, the character says "I did no more than you let me do." I got so much at of that because each time the hangman hung someone nobody stood up they all kept being nice and he said if you're nice to me I'll hang you. so each someone got hung, at the end that guy did because was the biggest servant of all of them.
I loved how the author used so many sensory images, similes and metaphors. Like when the poet used metaphor "as hangman tallied his bloody score, and sun by sun and night by night, the gallows tree grew monsterous height." I also loved how the author made the poem like a story and kept the rhyme.

Hangman Response from Adina
This poem had a very strong moral that I think is important but it was a bit too gory for me. The poem talked a lot about the scaffold growing and growing. In the first part the scaffold is just the size of the courthouse door. In the second section it says “The Hangman’s scaffold had grown in size: Fed by the blood beneath the chute The gallows-tree had taken root”. The scaffold could not have grown by blood but I think it is a metaphor of evil taking root. The scaffold was the instrument of evil that actually killed the innocent people. It grew bigger as more villagers were hanged and nobody did anything. This brings me to my next point. This is a quote that I think is very relevant to the poem. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men to do nothing” (Edmund Burke 1729-1797). This is what exactly happened in this poem. At the beginning the Hangman says the scaffold is for the person that helps him the most. Everyone stands by while people are being hanged because they are afraid if they stand up for them they too will get hanged. Also they hope to be spared because they think they are different then the people how were targeted first. Then at the very end the narrator feels tricked because he thinks that he did not help the Hangman. The Hangman says he helped him by being a coward and not standing up for the other people.

response to hangman
When I first read this poem it reminded me of World War 2. It reminded me of world war 2 because when the hangman enterd the city and hung a man, they all thought he was a joke, just what they thought of Hitler. This poem is a long one. It is so layerd, so its difficult to understand the first time you read it. This poem is about a hangman that comes into this little town. The hangman approches a man and hangs him. None of the other villagers stood up to him and tell him to stop, but they ask him who is he you raise the gallows tree, and he replys he who serves me best. The first man he hangs is an alein. This man was not a real alien it was just a foerigner. Then he hung a Jew and then a black so on and so forth until there was only one man left and the hangman. So that night the hangman asked the one man to help him take down the gallows tree, but tricks him into hanging him but before the man dies he asks him why are you hanging me? "Not I for answerd straight and i told you true the scaffhold was raised for none but you! You served me faithfully. And before you knew it he hung the man. This poem is a rhyming poem and it has four parts.

I Found a Metaphor in Hangman
In the first stanza when Ogden says "smelling of gold and blood and flame" creates a perfect metaphor. Of course you cant smell gold and blood and flame, so it creates the mood and the feeling that is in the scene.
It also creates a mental picture, you can almost feel the mood of the scene.

"The Hangman" - response by Shakaed
The poem “Hangman” reminded me of World War 2 because at the beginning the hangman hung one man and all the townspeople thought he was a joke and would stop after one night. That is the same as Hitler because at the beginning everybody thought he was a joke and would never get elected. Guess they were wrong, huh?
I think the most important line in the poem was “I did no more than you let me do”. Which I think means that if the speaker would have stood up for all the people who had been murdered by the Hangman then he would’ve stopped. But I think that maybe no one stood up because they were afraid that they would get hung. I think that some one should’ve stood up because you should do what you think is right even though it may involve sacrifice.

The Hangman response by Danny G.
The Hangman poem reminded me of Hitler because the Hangman was killing all different races and different types of people for no reason, which is exactly what Hitler. There is also a big moral to the poem that I didn't understand at first but then it made a lot more sense. The moral is, is that if you think you are doing nothing at all, you are still doing everything by doing nothing. What I mean by that, is that in the poem the Hangman was killing people, and everyone was watching but not doing anything to stop him. They all thought that they were doing nothing by watching him and not acting. But since they were not stopping him, they were then doing him a favour by not stopping it, which was doing something.

Paragraph on "The Hangman"
This poem reminded me of World War 2 when I read it. It reminded me of World War 2 because in the war Hitler killed blacks, Jews and people who were different from him. In the poem the Hang man killed the same people as Hitler did. This poem also reminded me of World War 2 because in the war there were many countries that didn’t join the war until later on and didn’t let Jews into their country. They were being bystanders. In the poem the town’s people were also being bystanders because they didn’t stop the Hangman from killing the other people.

The Hangman Sensory Images
Stanza # 1 Sensory Images:
-“Smelling of gold and blood flame”
-“The scaffold stood by the courthouse side, only as wide as the door was wide; with a frame as tall, or a little more, than the capping sill of the courthouse door. “
-“The hangman judged with the yellow twist of knotted hemp in his busy fist.”
-“We passed those eyes of buckshot lead.”
-“Then a twinkle grew in his buckshot eye”
-“And he stepped down and laid his hand on a man who came from another land,”

Hangman Paragraph
Hangman is the most powerful poem I have ever read. With so many sensory images, "Hangman" lets you make your own movie inside your head. It is so condensed that you could white a paragraph for every line in the poem. Even the fifth time I read it i still found out things I never knew before.

The Paragraph for the Poem Hangman
I thought that this poem relates to Hitler, because when Hitler became powerfull everybody thought that he was a joke. Just like the Hangman who everybody thought that he was just goingg to kill the man from outer town. After the hangman murdered the man from outer town everybody thought that he was going to leave, like Hitler. I thought that the hang man killed everybody because, because he wanted everybody to be just like him, like Hitler when he wanted everybody to be perfect.

“The Hangman, by Maurice Ogden”.
This poem made me think, remember and never forget. This poem was one big metaphor to me. The Holocaust in disguise, people were being killed. Nobody said it was wrong. Bystanders/ most of the world during the Holocaust/ the towns people. What a shame. The Victims/ Blacks, Jews, Disabled, Gays/ The infidel, Jew, Black, alien one and eventually the whole town plus the speaker.
We read a perfect example of how people can quickly become powerful and how we have to act before that power gets to us.
A lesson.
So many hidden meanings and riddles, that it just intrigues me more to read the poem over and over again.
Sick and disturbing mental pictures drive me away from the poem.
I have to know about my past and to make sure that I don't live one day without thinking of those people who died to make my life better today. Jews, non-Jews. I have to be aware and not let myself slip like the town's people in Ogden’s poem.
With this I conclude by saying that “The Hangman” was the best poem I have ever read. I recommend that everybody should read it. All Races, Religions, grannies, grandpas, moms and dads.

6A: The maps for the assignments can be a little difficult to read because of the shading. The information that you need is there, though. You can use the road map instead of the topographic map, as it is easier to read. Please only do the first side of the worksheet.

Mapping Paragraph
The world is divided in lots of lines called latitude and longitude. Latitude goes sideways and longitude goes up and down. As an example, the equator is 0 degrees latitude and the prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. Another part of mapping is the hemisphere. Hemisphere is made up of to words, hemi and sphere. Hemi means half and and sphere is a 3D circle. By using the equator and prime meridian, we divide the world into four quaters, north, south, east, and west. Maps are made to scale each in on map represents one mile on earth.

Map elements: In Janine's words
In today's lesson we learned about the equator, Prime Meridian, Lines of longitude and latitude, directions, different types of compasses, legends, scales and time zones.
EQUATOR AND PRIME MERIDIAN
The equator is the line that the sun hits the most and splits the world in an imaginary two peices. The equator is 0 degrees Latitude. The prime Meridian is the line that divides the world into an imaginary 4 peices after the equator. The Prime Meridian is 0 degrees longitude.
LINES OF LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
Lines of altitude and longitude is what helps people find where they are on this big planet earth. Lines of Latitude go from East to West. Lines of Longitude go from North to South. The prime Meridian is also a line of Longitude
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPASSES AND DIRECTIONS
There are 4 main directions, North, East, South and West. I know of 3 different types of compasses...The Rose compass, The regular compass and the one that has north east. The Compass rose is the one that shows at the corner of a map that sometimes doesn't show all the directions but it always shows North. The Regular and most common type of compass has every direction, N, E, S and W. The other compass that I don't know its name is the one that shows the intermediate directions and the Regular directions.
LEGENDS
Legends are small colored boxes with little symbols in them that are also on the map. They represent different things on the map such as Malls, Blocks, Strrets, Parks, etc.
That concludes todays lesson.

Mapping Elements
Today we learnt about the equator, prime meridian, latitude, and longitude. The equator is what circles the earth from east to west, it’s 0 degree latitude. The prime meridian is what circles the earth from north to south, it’s 0 degree longitude. Now you are probably wandering what’s latitude and longitude. Well latitude is imaginary lines that map makers made up to measure the earth’s length and find coordinates. Hemispheres are the four quarters of the world. There is the northwest hemisphere the northeast, the southwest hemisphere and southeast. That pretty much covers all of the basic mapping elements you need to know in grade six.

Mapping Paragraph by Shakaed
There are also Scales and Compass Rose on a map. Because maps are shrunken so many times compared to the real earth, there is a scale to show distances from one place to another. About 1 inch on map = 1 mile on Earth. A compass rose shows cardinal directions: North, East, South, West, and intermediate directions: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. There are 24 time zones per day. Each place has a different time zone.

Map Elements
Today I will be talking about latitude, longitude, hemispheres, directions, time zones, scales and map legends.
Let's start with latitude and longitude. The world has imaginary lines that help you locate a specific place. The lines that go east to west are called latitude lines while the lines that go north to south are called longitude lines. These lines are measured in degrees. In the middle of the world going east to west is the equator which is 0 degrees latitude while the prime meridian which goes north to south is 0 degrees longitude as shown on this map below.

Now let's go to hemispheres (means half earth) So if you think about it, it should be two halves but you are meant to count the Equator as a line and the prime meridian as a line so you end up with four quarters the north, south, east and west.
Just about every map has a compass rose which tells you which way north is so you know in what direction everything is. Another thing you have to remember is that there are two different kinds of directions: Cardinal directions which are north, south, east and west, and Intermediate directions which are northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest.
Onto map legends now. A map legend is just like an instruction manual which tells you what kind of map it is, a scale (which I will tell you about later) and little diagrams that tell you what they mean on the map.
A Scale is a graph that shows you how long a specific distance is on the map.
Time zones are lines on the map that show you the difference in time between other places, for example; the difference between New York and Vancouver is that New York is always three hours ahead.

Lesson 1 on Mapping
Mapping
There are many different parts to mapping. These include latitude, longitude, hemispheres, directions, time zones, scales, map legends and the compass rose. I am not going to explain each one of these, just the ones we have learned so far in class.
My first topic is the difference between latitude and longitude. The earth is divided into lots of different lines, latitude and longitude. Longitude means lines running vertically and latitude means lines running horizontally. The way we measure these lines are in degrees. For example the equator (which is the main line of latitude) is zero degrees latitude which would make the prime meridian (which is the main line of longitude) zero degrees longitude.
Now we will talk about hemispheres. If you split the word hemisphere in half it means a half a circle, kind of like splitting a ball in half it gives you two halves. By using the equator and the prime meridian we can divide the world into four equal hemispheres: north, east, south and west. So in other words we are cutting the world into four.
Another huge part of mapping is using scales. When you look at a map it usually looks very small. Of course it is not the real size of the area you are looking at, it is just a scaled size. For example one inch can be equal to one mile (different maps have different scales).
Even though the last mapping item on my list was the compass rose, it is certainly not the least. Without the compass rose we would not be able to know which direction we are travelling in. The compass rose is split into two portions. There are the cardinal directions and the intermediate directions. The cardinal directions are north, east, south and west and the intermediate directions are northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. The reader has now become an expert on four parts of mapping. I hope you have understood my careful explanations.

Map Elements: Brought to You by Marc Levin
Latitude, Longitude, the Hemispheres, Directions, Time Zones, Scales, and much, more! Where to start? I think the beginning.
The earth is divided into lots of imaginary lines called longitude, and latitude. Longitude lines go from the North to the South, and latitude lines go from the East to West. What helps remember latitude is to think of the lateral pass given by football player (American). These lines are measured in degrees
In this picture we can roughly make out the lines of longitude and latitude.
Also in this picture we can make out the Equator and Prime Meridian. What are those?
The Equator is the middle latitude line and is O degrees. Countries near by the Equator are some of the hottest places on the earth. The Equator goes from the East to the West
The Prime Meridian, is the exact opposite of the Equator. The Prime Meridian is the middle longitude line, but is also O degrees. The Prime Meridian goes from the North to South.
Hemisphere is such a long word, what does it mean? Hemi= Half/Sphere= 3D circle (earth). If you do the math one hemisphere is half the earth. The Equator and the Prime Meridian split the world into four hemispheres. North hemisphere, South hemisphere, East hemisphere, and the West hemisphere.
What garden can I find the Compass Rose in? None silly, a Compass Rose is not a flower, a Compass Rose tells us which direction is which. A Compass Rose is on a map. A Compass Rose shows the Cardinal Direction- North, South, East, West. A Compass Rose also shows the Intermediate Directions- North, South, East, West. Now when I ask you what a Compass Rose is I would like to hear a proper answer! :)
To me Scales are a really cool feature that comes with maps. An example of a scale would be:![]()
Every four inches on the map = one Kilometer. At first it is confusing using scales, but once you get used to it, you can't stop measuring your whole map.

Eli's Mapping
Every geographer knows that a map is made of many important parts. Each part tells about something different. It goes beyond giving just direction like north, south, east and west. There are the imaginary lines called longitude that go around the earth north south. There are also imaginary lines that go east west and they are called latitude. The equator is zero degrees latitude and the prime meridian is zero degrees longitude. Longitude and latitude cut up the world into what looks like little squares. Hemispheres also divide up a map with the northern hemishphere, southern hemisphere, eastern hemisphere and western hemisphere. Time zones split the world into different times according to when it is daylight and night time. It can be night in one part and day in another part at the same time. Maps are not as big as the real world so they need a scale. A scale helps you to understand the distances. For example one centimetre on a scale can equal one kilometer on the ground. Finally there is the legend. There are different kinds which give information about what the map is about. For example shading can show the number of hurricanes if it is a map about weather. So whether you are lost in Burnaby or in the jungles of Peru it is really important to read a map because you never know when google earth and your internet might not be working.

mapping paragraph
On every map there is a grid. This grid is made up from latitude lines, which run from east to west and longitude lines which run north to south. These lines are used to measure degrees. In the middle of the globe is the equator. The equator is 0 degrees latitude. The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. The world is split into four halves, called hemispheres. Northern hemisphere, Southern hemisphere, Eastern hemisphere and Western hemisphere.
On each map has one compass rose. This compass usually tells you where the north part of the map is, but sometimes it might also say, East, South and West. On a map it also has a scale. A scale shows the distances from one place to another. The earth is divided into 24 different time zones of 24 hours a day. If one place would be night then in another place it would be day.

Map elements by: Arieh Leon Dales
Map Elements
The elements on a map are Latitude, Longitude, the Hemispheres, Directions, Time Zone, Scale and the Map Legend. Latitude lines are imaginary lines on a map that goes east to west and Vic versa. Longitude lines are imaginary line on a map that goes north to south and Vic versa. Earth is divided up by these two types of lines. Latitude and Longitude are measured in Degrees. The middle latitude line is called the Equator the middle longitude line is called the Prime Meridian. The Equator is 0 degree latitude and the Prime Meridian is 0 degree longitude.
Hemisphere means, half a sphere (hemi=half sphere=3D ball). By using the Equator and the Prime Meridian you can split the world into 4 Hemispheres. The Hemispheres are North, East, West and South. These directions are known as the Cardinal Directions. There are also Intermediate Directions which are, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. The way you know where each direction is, is by using a Compass Rose. A Compass Rose on a map points to each direction. By using a Compass Rose and a Scale you can find out if you go 2 inches South how long that is in Miles, Kilometers and sometimes Feet or Yards. The only way to do this is by using your Scale on a map and a ruler. The Scale shows you how many Kilometers you go in measurements as little as an inch.
